Jeffrey William Newman OAM (born 4 February 1944) [1] is a former Australian television presenter. He was the Seven Network's weather presenter in Perth from 1991 to 2009.

Media career

Newman began his media career with 6GE in Geraldton, Western Australia in early 1963, filling a vacancy left by the departure of Tony Barber. [2] When STW-9 began broadcasting in 1965, Newman became host of The Jeff Newman Show. [2]

After a disagreement with management, he crossed over to the rival TVW-7 in 1967 and worked in various positions within the industry, before joining Seven News in 1982 as a newsreader. He was the weather presenter on Seven News from 1991 to 2009. [2] [3] Newman was also known for his role as Western Australian presenter of It's Academic , a popular school quiz program that ran for ten years from 1969 to 1979 and later revived from 2001 and 2005. He also served as the main anchor host of the annual Perth Telethon between 1968 and 2009. [2]

His brother is Peter Newman, another well-known Perth media personality. [2]

Retirement

Newman announced his retirement on 1 July 2009 and was replaced by Natalia Cooper. [2] [4] He did his last weather broadcast on 10 August 2009. [4]

In 2013 he revealed to The West Australian that he was battling prostate cancer. He has since recovered. [5]

Honours

Newman won five Logie Awards for the state's most popular male television personality. In 1994 he was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for services to charity and fundraising. [6] [7] [8] [9] [10] [11]

The 17th Annual TV Week Logie Awards were presented on Friday 7 March 1975 at Southern Cross Hotel in Melbourne and broadcast on the Nine Network. It was the first time the Awards were telecast in Colour. Bert Newton from the Nine Network was the Master of Ceremonies. American film star John Wayne and television actors Lee Majors and William Conrad, British actor Edward Woodward and his wife Michele Dotrice, and Australian-born British television stars Keith Michell and Diane Cilento appeared as guests. Each of the guest presenters were given special souvenir Logies.

Jeffrey Travis Andrew Phillips is an Australian TV show host, personality, musical theatre actor and pop singer active from 1966 to the early 1990s. As a pop singer, he had a Top 40 hit on the Go-Set singles chart with a cover version of The Shirelles' 1961 hit, "Baby It's You". At the Logie Awards of 1970, he won the Best New Talent category for hosting his own ABC TV pop show, Sounds Like Us. In the early 1970s he hosted a series of teen pop music shows, Happening '71 and Happening '72. In July 1972 Phillips won a song prize at the Fifth Olympiad of Song, held in Athens, performing his self-written work, "Gloria"; the prize money was 100,000 drachmae. Although he issued further singles, until the early 1980s, he had no other national Top 40 chart success. From July 1985 to October 1987 he appeared in the Australian stage production of Cats in the role of Rum Tum Tugger in both the Sydney run and the Melbourne season; he also performed on the original Australian cast album.

The Channel Seven Perth Telethon, regionally known simply as Telethon, is an annual telethon established in 1968 by philanthropist Sir James Cruthers and Brian Treasure, and produced by TVW, a Seven Network-owned television station in Perth, Western Australia. It raises money for over 100 beneficiaries each year including the Perth Children's Hospital, the Telethon Clinical Research Centre and the Telethon Kids Institute. Channel Seven's Perth Telethon is the highest donating telethon per capita in the world, and since the first Telethon in 1968 has raised over A$600 million in total.

The 55th Annual TV Week Logie Awards was held on Sunday 7 April 2013 at the Crown Palladium in Melbourne, and broadcast on the Nine Network and simulcast of Today Network's radio stations. Public voting for the "Most Popular" categories were conducted through an online survey from late November 2012 to 10 February 2013. Nominations were announced on 11 March 2013. Network Ten's Offspring received the most nominations with eight. Hamish and Andy's Euro Gap Year, Hamish and Andy's Caravan of Courage: Australia Vs New Zealand, Home and Away, Howzat! Kerry Packer's War, and Puberty Blues each received five nominations. Television presenter Brian Henderson was inducted into the Logies Hall of Fame.
