The county seat and largest city is Rigby. The county was established in 1913 and named after Thomas Jefferson, the third U.S. President. Jefferson County is part of the Idaho Falls, ID Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The Jefferson County School System is the second-largest public school system in Alabama, United States. It is the third oldest school system in Jefferson County preceded only by the Birmingham and Bessemer School Systems. The Jefferson County School System was created in 1896, and initially served all unincorporated communities and cities in the county other than Birmingham and Bessemer. Beginning in the late 1960s and early 1970s various other cities began to establish their own separate systems. Today the County system serves students in those unincorporated areas of Jefferson County, Alabama such as Alliance, Bagley, Concord, Corner, Forestdale, McCalla, Minor, Mt. Olive, and Oak Grove. It also includes students who reside in the cities of Adamsville, Clay, Fultondale, Gardendale, Graysville, Hueytown, Irondale, Kimberly, Morris, Pinson, Pleasant Grove, and Warrior among others. Those cities listed below each have a city-based school system, therefore, their students do not attend schools in the Jefferson County School System:
Anne Arundel County Public Schools is the public school district serving Anne Arundel County, Maryland. With over 80,000 students, the AACPS school system is the 4th largest in Maryland and the 39th largest in the United States. The district has over 5,000 teachers supporting a comprehensive curriculum from Pre-K through 12th grade.

The North and South Menan Buttes in southeastern Idaho are two of the world's largest volcanic tuff cones. The two cones, with four smaller associated cones, align along a north-northwest line and comprise the Menan Complex. The buttes rise about 800 feet above the surrounding Snake River plain and are late Pleistocene in age, dating to approximately 10,000 YBP. The South Menan Butte is currently in private hands, however North Menan Butte is publicly owned and has been designated as a National Natural Landmark and a Research Natural Area by the United States Congress. The US Bureau of Land Management designated the North Butte as an Area of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC).

Harrisburg School District is one of the largest school districts in South Dakota, located 7 miles from Sioux Falls in Lincoln County, serving 4,547 students as of September 2019. The Superintendent of the district is Tim Graf. As of the 2019–20 school year, the district will also have five schools within the Sioux Falls city limits, due to the fact that the city limits overlap into Lincoln County.
The Bonneville Joint School District #93 (D93) is a public school district in the U.S. state of Idaho, headquartered in an unincorporated area of Bonneville County. District #93 serves more than 13,000 students in 20 schools, making it the fourth-largest by enrollment in the state. The district has: 15 elementary schools serving students in K-6, two middle schools serving students in grades 7–8, and six high schools serving students in grades 9-12.
