Jeffrey R. Docking is president of Adrian College. He has held that position since 2005. He previously worked as a senior administrator and men's ice hockey coach at Washington &Jefferson College.
Docking grew up in Michigan,including a portion of time beginning in 2nd grade when his family lived in the Michigan State University dormitories while his father completed doctoral studies. [1] During that time,he became a fan of the Michigan State Spartans men's ice hockey and worked as a stick boy. [1] Upon completion of his studies,Docking's father became deputy superintendent of the East Lansing Public Schools. [1]
Following undergraduate studies at Michigan State University,Docking worked for a short time as a reporter for WFSL-TV in Lansing,Michigan,covering the Michigan State Capitol. [1] [2] He left that position to attend Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary,where he earned a M.Div degree. [1] He then attended Boston University to earn a Ph.D. in social ethics. [2] To pay the bills during that time,he worked as a residence hall director for the Boston University dormitories. [1]
He and his wife Elizabeth have four children,two of whom were born during the six years that the family lived in the Boston University dormitories. [1] [2]
During his career at Washington &Jefferson College in Washington,Pennsylvania,Docking served as dean of students. [1] President Brian C. Mitchell made him vice president and special assistant to the president. [1] In that position,he was a member of the "President's Cabinet" and was tasked with improving relations between the City of Washington and the college. [3]
He also served as coach of the Washington &Jefferson men's ice hockey team for a time,leading the program to replace the old Washington Park ice rink with a new facility that was supposed to have been supported by municipal bonds from the city of Washington. [4]
In 2004,he completed a fellowship at Carnegie Mellon University where he shadowed president Jared Cohon for a year. [1]
Docking became the 17th president of Adrian College in July 2005 [2] He sought to improve the college's precarious financial situation by doubling the endowment. [1] He proposed to improve the town and gown relationship by holding a "coffee hour" with the president,developing classes for senior citizens,and encouraging student internships in the community. [1]
Early in his tenure,he introduced a mandatory four-year residency for all students "to raise funds," a marked departure from previous policies. [5]

Finlandia University was a private Lutheran university in Hancock,Michigan. It was the only private university in the Upper Peninsula. Founded in 1896 as The Suomi College and Theological Seminary,it was affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The university closed after the spring semester of 2023 due to enrollment and financial challenges.

The Michigan State Spartans are the athletic teams that represent Michigan State University. The school's athletic program includes 23 varsity sports teams. Their mascot is a Spartan warrior named Sparty,and the school colors are green and white. The university participates in the NCAA's Division I and the Football Bowl Subdivision for football. Ronald Herbert Mason was a Canadian ice hockey player,head coach,and university executive. A head coach of various American universities,most notably Michigan State University (MSU),he was the most successful coach in NCAA ice hockey history between 1993 and 2012 with 924 wins,until Jerry York became the new winningest coach with his 925th career win on December 29,2012. Mason was athletic director at MSU from 2002 to 2008. He then served as senior advisor for the USHL Muskegon Lumberjacks. On December 2,2013,Mason was inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame.
John Clough Holmes was an American agriculturalist,educator,and co-founder of the Michigan State Agricultural Society. Holmes is also known as the founder of Michigan State University,established in 1855 as an agriculture college,the first of its kind in the United States. Holmes Hall,the home of the Lyman Briggs College,is named in his honor.

Paul Ausborn Miller was an American academic administrator who served as the 6th president of the Rochester Institute of Technology from 1969–1979. He oversaw the completion of the move of the campus to Henrietta and the steady growth of RIT between 1969 and 1981.
The Michigan State Spartans men's ice hockey team is the college ice hockey team that represents Michigan State University (MSU). The team plays at the Munn Ice Arena in East Lansing,Michigan,on the MSU campus. The Spartans have won the NCAA national championship three times. The current head coach is Adam Nightingale,who took over coaching duties on May 3,2022,after Danton Cole was fired. Michigan State currently competes in the Big Ten Conference.
The Washington &Jefferson Presidents are the intercollegiate athletic teams for Washington &Jefferson College. The name "Presidents" refers to the two presidential namesakes of the college:George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. The history of Washington &Jefferson College begins with three log cabin colleges established by three frontier clergymen in the 1780s:John McMillan,Thaddeus Dod,and Joseph Smith. The three men,all graduates from the College of New Jersey,came to present-day Washington County to plant churches and spread Presbyterianism to what was then the American frontier beyond the Appalachian Mountains. John McMillan,the most prominent of the three founders because of his strong personality and longevity,came to the area in 1775 and built his log cabin college in 1780 near his church in Chartiers. Thaddeus Dod,known as a keen scholar,built his log cabin college in Lower Ten Mile in 1781. Joseph Smith taught classical studies in his college,called "The Study" at Buffalo.
Thomas A. Anastos is an American ice hockey coach,former player,and former league administrator. He was most recently the head coach of the Michigan State Spartans men's ice hockey team (MSU),a member of the Big Ten Conference in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). He played junior hockey for the Paddock Pool Saints,college hockey for the Michigan State University Spartans and professional hockey for the Sherbrooke Canadiens. He was an ice hockey league administrator most recently serving as commissioner of the original Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA),a now defunct NCAA Division I conference,from 1998-2012. Anastos is a member of the Dearborn (Michigan) Sports Hall of Fame,inducted in 2000.
John R. Vivian was a Canadian ice hockey player,college football player,ice hockey head coach,general manager,professional scout,and university administrator. He was most notable as the first head coach of the Bowling Green State University (BGSU) varsity ice hockey program and the then-youngest general manager in professional hockey with the Cleveland Crusaders of the World Hockey Association from 1973-76. He was a member of the Adrian College and Bowling Green State athletic halls of fame. He died in February 2021.

John Thomas Berry is an American sports journalist. A native of Detroit,he graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in journalism,and wrote for the school's student newspaper,The State News. He was a correspondent for United Press International at the bureau in Lansing,Michigan,before working on the sports staff of the Detroit Free Press. He served as president of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association in 1971,then worked at The Detroit News from 1971 to 1993. As a golf correspondent and author of the "Golf Page",he covered more than 70 major golf championships during his career.
