Jeffrey Gunter (born June 1, 1999) is a former American football defensive end who played two seasons in the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Coastal Carolina along with N.C. State and was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft.

Early life

Gunter grew up in Durham, North Carolina and attended Riverside High School. [1]

College career

Gunter played in all 12 of Coastal Carolina's games as a freshman. He became a starter going into his sophomore season and was named first-team All-Sun Belt Conference after recording 49 tackles and 14 tackles for loss. [2] Following the end of the season, Gunter left the program and transferred to North Carolina State in order to be closer to home. After sitting out one year due to NCAA transfer rules, he opted to transfer back to Coastal Carolina. [3] In his first season back with the Chanticleers, Gunter was again named first-team All-Sun Belt after finishing the year with 58 tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss, and 6.5 sacks. [4] He was named second-team All-Sun Belt as a redshirt senior. [5]

Cincinnati Bengals

Gunter was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the seventh round (252nd overall) of the 2022 NFL draft. [8] [9]

2022

Gunter took the bulk of his snaps with the team on special teams, and would finish the regular season with one assisted tackle. He was a healthy inactive for all three of the Bengals' playoff games. [10]

2023

Gunter was waived by the Bengals on August 29, 2023, and re-signed to the practice squad the following day. [11] [12] Following the end of the 2023 regular season, the Bengals signed him to a reserve/future contract on January 8, 2024. [13]

Retirement

Gunter announced his retirement from the NFL on August 14, 2024. [14]

The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers baseball program has been the university's most consistent program in terms of success. Former Head Coach Gary Gilmore led the Chanticleers to 19 NCAA Regional appearances and three Super Regional appearances since being hired in 1996. The program has hosted a regional after being a #1 seed on six occasions. They have won 50+ games in 2005, 2007, 2008, 2010, and 2016. The program hosted a Super Regional in 2010 and won the 2016 College World Series.

During their Big South tenure, the Chanticleers were one of that league's more successful teams, both within the conference and in the NCAA Tournament.
