Jenny-May Clarkson (born Jenny-May Coffin; 9 April 1974) is a New Zealand netball player, sports commentator and television presenter.

Clarkson previously played for the Silver Ferns, New Zealand's national netball team, for which she was the vice-captain in 2001. She also played for the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic in the National Bank Cup between 1998–2004 and the Auckland Diamonds in 2007; she also played one season in the ANZ Championship in 2008 for the Southern Steel, and was signed to play with the Northern Mystics in 2010.

Since 2005, Clarkson has been a sports commentator and news presenter for TVNZ and Māori Television. She currently co-hosts Breakfast with Matty Mclean and Indira Stewart.

Early life

Jenny-May Coffin was born in Te Kuiti, New Zealand. She was the youngest of six children raised by Waka and Paddy Coffin in Piopio, [1] close to Mokaukohunui marae. Her father's parents were Charlie Coffin, a Pakeha, and Harata, a Maori. [2]

International netball

Jenny-May Coffin played for the Silver Ferns from 1997–2002. She was vice-captain in 2001, and represented the Silver Ferns at the 2002 Commonwealth Games. She made 26 caps for the Ferns before retiring from international netball at the end of 2002. [3] [4]

Domestic netball

Jenny-May Coffin has been playing in New Zealand domestic netball leagues since 1995 and the National Bank Cup since 1998. She started playing for the Waikato/Bay of Plenty Magic in 1998 and in 2000 was appointed captain. She left the Magic in 2004, going into retirement and worked as a sports presenter on TVNZ. She returned to netball in 2006 and played in the National Championships before playing in the Auckland Diamonds as captain in 2007. With the National Bank Cup replaced by the ANZ Championship in 2008, Coffin was signed with the Southern Steel on a two-year contract. However, she pulled out of the team after the first season to focus on her television career. [5] Coffin announced her return to competitive netball in October 2009, signing with the Northern Mystics for the 2010 ANZ Championship season. [6]

Broadcasting

Clarkson first joined TVNZ in 2005 as the netball commentator for the National Bank Cup on ONE Sport. In March of that year she was announced as the weekend sports presenter and sports producer during the weekdays. In 2006, she regained her role on ONE Sport and she rejoined the netball commentating team. In 2007, she played for the Auckland Diamonds netball team. She presented sport on TV One on Mondays and Tuesdays, and commentated some National Bank Cup games. She was a news presenter on TVNZ 7 before TVNZ dropped the station. [7]

Clarkson replaced Daniel Faitaua as the news presenter on Breakfast on TVNZ 1 in September 2019. [8] In August 2020 she succeeded Hayley Holt as co-presenter, alongside John Campbell. [8]

Controversy

In April 2018 after the Silver Ferns failed to qualify for a medal at the Commonwealth Games, the broadcasters remarks about having pride in the black dress to the current captain Katrina Rore were commented as being too harsh [9]

Personal life

Clarkson married Dean Clarkson in 2015; [10] the couple had twin sons in 2016. [11]

Maree Bowden is a New Zealand international netball player. Bowden played with the Canterbury Flames in the National Bank Cup from 1999 to 2007. She continued with the Canterbury franchise, which became the Canterbury Tactix, when the ANZ Championship began in 2008. With the retirement of long-standing Canterbury captain Julie Seymour after the 2009 season, in 2010 Bowden was given the captaincy role of the Tactix.

Leana de Bruin is a South African and New Zealand international netball player. De Bruin played 34 tests for South Africa before moving to New Zealand in 2000. She made her on-court debut for the Silver Ferns in 2003, and has gone on to represent New Zealand at the Commonwealth Games and Netball World Championships, playing in the goal defence and goal keeper positions. In 2009, she pulled out of the team due to pregnancy, before returning the following year.

She is the most capped player in the history of the Silver Ferns, having overtaken Irene van Dyk's record of 145 test matches in October 2018.

Brown was a member of the New Zealand national netball team, the Silver Ferns from 2002 to 2015, taking time off in between those periods due to injury and pregnancy, earning 61 caps. She has also played elite domestic netball in New Zealand for 13 years, and has signed with the Southern Steel for 2014. She played for the Central Pulse in 2015 and was getting set to play her final season in 2016 before she injured her ACL in the preseason and decided to retire from domestic netball after she had retired from international netball in 2015. In 2015, Jodi began co-coaching at St Hilda's Collegiate, Dunedin with the year nine A team. She has since followed this team through the years, which included a devastating 1 point loss in the SISS final. In 2018, Brown coached the St Hilda's Senior A team and also coached the Dunedin U17 team to 11th place at Nationals.

Cathrine Tuivaiti is a New Zealand netball player of Tongan, Samoan, and Māori descent.

Grace Kara is a New Zealand netball player of Samoan descent. Kara played in the National Bank Cup for the Auckland Diamonds from 2005 to 2007. She continued playing in Auckland for the Northern Mystics in the ANZ Championship, starting in 2008. She is the younger sister of fellow Mystics player Rachel Rasmussen and she is also the older sister of Ann-Helen Rasmussen.

Debbie Fuller is a New Zealand netball coach and former international netball player. Fuller was a defender in the New Zealand national netball team, the Silver Ferns, from 1993 to 1996, during which time she competed at the 1995 Netball World Championships in Birmingham. Fuller retired from the Silver Ferns after 1996, spending a year in Argentina. She returned for the 1997 provincial season, and the following year captained Canterbury in the inaugural National Bank Cup. Fuller moved to the Capital Shakers in 1999, playing with the Wellington-based side until her retirement in 2002.

Courtney Tairi is a former New Zealand netball international. She also represented Australia at under-21 level. She was a member of the Australia team that won the 2009 World Youth Netball Championships. During the ANZ Championship era, Tairi played for New South Wales Swifts, Southern Steel and Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic. She finished her netball playing career with Northern Stars in the 2017 ANZ Premiership. Since retiring as a netball player, Tairi has worked a broadcaster, presenter and commentator for Sky Sport.

Kayla Malvina Johnson is a New Zealand netball player. As a high school student, Cullen played representative netball and basketball, and competed at a national level in athletics. In 2008, she was selected in the New Zealand U21 netball team, and was a member of the side that finished second at the 2009 World Youth Netball Championships, behind Australia.

Sulu Fitzpatrick, also known as Sulu Tone-Fitzpatrick, is a New Zealand netball and rugby sevens player. She plays for the Northern Mystics in the ANZ Championships. She can play the Goal Keeper, Goal Defence, and Wing Defence positions. She is of Samoan heritage.
