Jens Harzer (born 14 March 1972) is a German stage, film, and television actor. He began his career at the Munich Kammerspiele, and has been a member of the Thalia Theatre in Hamburg since 2009. He has appeared at the Salzburg Festival regularly since 2000. Harzer received prizes for roles on stage, in film and on television. He has been the bearer of the Iffland-Ring since March 2019.

Career

Born in Wiesbaden, he was trained as an actor at the Otto Falckenberg School of the Performing Arts in Munich. [1] From 1993 to 2009 he was a member of the ensemble of Dieter Dorn, first at the Munich Kammerspiele and then at the Bayerisches Staatsschauspiel. [2] He played the title roles of Roberto Zucco  [ fr ] by Bernard-Marie Koltès, staged by Christian Stückl  [ de ], Goethe's Urfaust and Torquato Tasso , Kleist's Amphitryon  [ de ] and Büchner's Woyzeck , staged by Martin Kušej. [2] Harzer has been a member of the Thalia Theatre in Hamburg since 2009. [3] [4]

Since 2000, Harzer has been a regular guest at the Salzburg Festival. [2] Again in a production staged by Stückl, he played the role of Death in Hofmannsthal's Jedermann . In 2008 there, Harzer played the leading role in a staged version of Dostoevsky's Verbrechen und Strafe , staged by Andrea Breth. In 2011, he played the role of Ich in the world premiere of Peter Handke's Immer noch Sturm at the Festival. [5]

Harzer has appeared in 15 films since 1995. At the 56th Berlin International Film Festival in 2006, he performed in two films, Requiem by Hans-Christian Schmid and, in the title role, the drama Der Lebensversicherer by Bülent Akıncı. [2] He won the Silver George for Best Actor at the 28th Moscow International Film Festival for the latter film. [6]

Harzer was named by Bruno Ganz to be his successor as bearer of the Republic of Austria's Iffland-Ring, traditionally bestowed upon the "most significant and most worthy actor of the German-speaking theatre" in the opinion of the previous bearer. [3] [7] [8] [9] Harzer was awarded the ring in a ceremony at the Burgtheater in June 2019, four months after Ganz's death. [10] [11] [12]

The holder, or bearer, of the Iffland-Ring is considered to be the "most significant and most worthy actor of the German-speaking theatre", in the opinion of the previous holder who has passed it to him by will.

Harry Alfred Robert Kupfer was a German opera director and academic. A long-time director at the Komische Oper Berlin, he worked at major opera houses and at festivals internationally. Trained by Walter Felsenstein, he worked in the tradition of realistic directing. At the Bayreuth Festival, he staged Wagner's Der fliegende Holländer in 1978 and Der Ring des Nibelungen in 1988. At the Salzburg Festival, he directed the premiere of Penderecki's Die schwarze Maske in 1986 and Der Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss in 2014.

Horst Sachtleben was a German actor, voice actor and stage director. He is known for his acting in Um Himmels Willen, a television series in 197 episodes between 2002 and 2020. On stage, he was engaged at the Hebbel Theater in Berlin, Schauspielhaus Zürich and Bayerisches Staatsschauspiel in Munich. As a voice artist, he dubbed Peter Falk in Columbo, Peter Fonda and Woody Allen, among others.

Jutta Lampe was a German actress on stage and in film. She was for 30 years a leading actress at the Schaubühne founded in Berlin by her husband Peter Stein, where she played both classical theatre such as Alkmene in Kleist's Amphitryon, and world premieres including Robert Wilson's Orlando for one actor, and roles that Botho Strauß created for her. She was also engaged at the Vienna Burgtheater and the Schauspielhaus Zürich. She appeared in more than twenty films from 1963, including lead roles in films by Margarethe von Trotta. Hellmuth Matiasek was an Austrian theatre and film director, theatre manager and teacher. He founded a small avant-garde theatre in Vienna at age 22. After working at the Salzburger Landestheater as stage director, he became the company's intendant in 1962, then the youngest intendant in German-speaking theatre. From 1983 to 1996, he was intendant of the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz in Munich, where he co-founded and later managed the drama school Bayerische Theaterakademie August Everding. He was close to the composer Carl Orff, and managed the Carl Orff-Festspiele Andechs.
