Torquato Tasso is a play in verse by the German dramatist Johann Wolfgang von Goethe about the sixteenth-century Italian poet and courtier Torquato Tasso and his descent into madness. The composition of the play began in Weimar in 1780 but most of it was written between 1786 and 1788, while Goethe was in Italy. He completed the play in 1790. [1]

Rinaldo, Op. 50, is a cantata for tenor solo, four-part male chorus and orchestra by German composer Johannes Brahms. It was begun in 1863 as an entry for a choral competition announced in Aachen. He chose as his text the dramatic poem of the same name by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, which presents an episode from the epic Jerusalem Delivered by Torquato Tasso in the form of a series of dialogues between the knight Rinaldo, who has been enchanted by the witch Armida, and his fellow knights, who are calling him back to the path of duty.

Torquato Tasso is a melodramma semiserio, or "semi-serious" opera, in three acts by Gaetano Donizetti and based on the life of the great poet Torquato Tasso. The Italian libretto was written by Jacopo Ferretti, who used a number of sources for his text, including works by Giovanni Rosini, Goethe, Goldoni and Lord Byron, as well as Tasso's actual poetry. It premiered on 9 September 1833 at the Teatro Valle, Rome.
