Jeremiah Choy is an actor, writer, director and choreographer.
Choy is a trained lawyer who went full-time into directing, acting, writing and choreography in 1997. Since 1988, he has performed and toured in many critically acclaimed productions with TheatreWorks. He was part of the Best Actor (Ensemble) in the Descendents of the Eunuch Admiral in the Cairo International Festival of Experimental Theatre in 1996.
Choy directed various productions such as A Broadway Christmas Carol and Machine, where he was nominated the best Director for the DBS Life! Theatre Awards in 2002. He also produced and co-directed Margaret Chan in Emily of Emerald Hill in Singapore Arts Festival 2010, and directed The Conference of the Birds for Singapore Arts Festival 2011.
In addition, he directed and co-wrote DragonTales, which premiered in Manila in 2010. He helmed the Play Den Productions, a joint venture with the Arts House, which is a platform for Singapore works. He directed ChildAid in 2011, and will be directing ChildAid 2012 at the Marina Bay Sands Grand Theatre. He has been a resident Judge of the Singapore Youth Festival's Drama Competition since 2000. He directed Selamat for Spotlight Singapore in Cape Town 2011 and Living Dreams for Spotlight Singapore in Bratislava and Prague 2012. He has just curated and wrote for this year's NS45: Fathers and Sons, and co-curated for four hubs Singapore Heritage Festival 2012: Jurong Point, Bugis, Century Square and 112 Katong.
He had directed The Swing Thing, the closing show for NUS Arts Festival in March 2013.
He was the Artistic Programme Director for the Social Functions of World Bank IMF 2006 and APEC 2009 and is currently the Artistic Director for p.L.a.Y!, a Young NTUC's performing arts group. Choy was awarded the inaugural Outstanding Kent Ridge Hall Alumni award in 2010.
Choy founded the Orangedot Group of Companies comprising Orangedot Productions Pte Ltd, Orangedot Entertainment Pte Ltd, Orangedot Management Pte Ltd and Orangedot Talents Pte Ltd. The four companies complement and complete the services in the arts and entertainment industry from providing consultancy and production to looking after the needs of the people in the industry. He was also founding member and President of the Association of Singapore Actors.
Choy has various stints of teaching at several educational institutes in Singapore. He had taught at National University of Singapore Department of Theatre Studies, Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, LASALLE College of the Arts and Singapore Management University School of Social Sciences.
In 2015, Choy was the creative director of Sing50, a concert to honour 50 years of Singapore music. [1]
Ivan Heng is a Singaporean actor and theatre director of Peranakan descent. He is the founding artistic director of W!LD RICE, a theatre company in Singapore, and an outspoken advocate for respect for diversity and freedom of expression.
New Creation Church is a non-denominational Charismatic Christian megachurch in Singapore. Founded in 1984, it holds church services at The Star Performing Arts Centre. It is a member of the National Council of Churches of Singapore (NCCS). New Creation Church also manages a business arm, Rock Productions Pte Ltd, which owns and operates a performing arts centre and shopping mall, The Star, and a travel agency, Omega Tours & Travel.
Claire Wong is a Malaysian actor, director, producer, and filmmaker. She is the co-founder and Joint Artistic Director and Producer of Checkpoint Theatre. Wong writes, directs, produces, and acts for the stage and for the camera. She has received training in both Asian and Western performing arts and obtained her post-graduate degree, a Master of Fine Arts (MFA), from Columbia University. Wong's recent producing and directing credits include: Huzir Sulaiman's The Last Bull: A Life in Flamenco , Occupation (2012) and The Weight of Silk on Skin (2011); Faith Ng's Normal , For Better or for Worse (2013) and wo(men) (2010); Joel Tan's The Way We Go (2014). Her play Recalling Mother which was co-written and co-directed with Noorlinah Mohamed, recently played at Esplanade's The Studios and at the Brisbane and OzAsia Festivals.
The National Arts Council (NAC) is a statutory board established on 15 October 1991 to oversee the development of arts in Singapore. It is under the purview of the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth. The NAC provides grants, scholarships, awards and platforms for arts practitioners, as well as arts education and programmes for the general public.
Ong Keng Sen is a Singaporean director of the theatre group TheatreWorks, which was founded in 1985.
Mark Chan is a Singaporean composer, recording artist, singer, instrumentalist, poet, and painter. He studied fine arts at the Edinburgh College of Art and is recognised as a renowned Singaporean composer.
Kelvin Sng is a Singaporean filmmaker and lyricist, known for directing the comedy films Taxi! Taxi! (2013) and The Fortune Handbook (2017).
Haresh Sharma is a Malaysian born naturalised Singaporean playwright. To date, he has written more than 100 plays that have been staged all over the world, including Singapore, Melbourne, Glasgow, Birmingham, Cairo and London. Sharma has a BA from the National University of Singapore as well as an MA in Playwriting from the University of Birmingham, obtained in 1994 on a Shell-NAC Scholarship.
Alvin Tan is the founder and artistic director of The Necessary Stage (TNS), and the co-artistic director of the M1 Singapore Fringe Festival. Under Tan's leadership, TNS has grown from a small society in 1987 to one of Singapore’s most prominent and respected theatre companies. He also initiated the Company's Theatre For Youth Branch and the Marine Parade Theatre Festival.
Huzir Sulaiman is a Malaysian director and actor. He is the co-founder and Joint Artistic Director of Checkpoint Theatre. A critically acclaimed and award-winning playwright, his Collected Plays 1998-2012 was published in 2013. His plays have been translated into German, Japanese, Polish, Indonesian and Mandarin. His essays and commentary pieces have appeared in The Star, The Straits Times and The Huffington Post.
Neila Sathyalingam was a Singaporean classical Indian dancer, choreographer and instructor of Sri Lankan Tamil origin. An alumna of Kalakshetra in Madras under the tutelage of Srimathi Rukmini Devi Arundale, she emigrated with her family to Singapore in 1974. In 1977 she and her husband founded the performance arts company Apsaras Arts, which has staged performances throughout the world. She was the company's artistic director and continued to teach dance.
Nelson Chia is a Singaporean theatre director, actor and lecturer. He is the co-founder of Nine Years Theatre.
Kuo Pao Kun was a playwright, theatre director, and arts activist in Singapore who wrote and directed both Mandarin and English plays. Tay Jun Kiat Kiki known professionally as Kiki Tay, is a Singaporean magician, comedian, performing arts director and entrepreneur. Kiki is currently the ambassador of Science Centre Singapore and the Special Effects Designer for the Singapore National Day Parade 2017.
East West Theatre Company was established in 2005 in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is a nonprofit cultural institution which produces performing arts programs, publications, films, and music events. It also organizes touring shows, discussions, forums, master-classes and workshops. Important components of its work include a creation of new work and a commitment to international cooperation.
Thirunalan Sasitharan is a Singaporean theatre educator and the co-founder and director of Intercultural Theatre Institute (ITI), formerly known as the Theatre Training & Research Programme (TTRP).
Santha Bhaskar, néePankyamma Santhamma was a Singaporean dancer, teacher, and choreographer. Born in India, she trained and performed in multiple classical Indian dance forms, including Mohiniyattam, Kathakali and Bharatanatyam. She performed and choreographed a number of well received dance productions in Singapore, and taught dance for several decades at the academy established by her husband as well as the National University of Singapore. Her work is known for incorporating elements of Thai, Chinese, and Malay dance, music, and culture into Indian classical dance. She is the recipient of several awards for her contributions to dance, including the Cultural Medallion, the Bintang Bakti Masyarakat, the Pingat Jasa Gemilang, and has been inducted into the Singapore Women's Hall of Fame.
