Spotlight Singapore [1] is a cultural diplomacy platform that serves as a gateway to emerging and growth-leading markets Singapore. The first five editions of Spotlight Singapore were managed by the former The Old Parliament House Limited (TOPH). The Spotlight Singapore brand was transferred to The RICE Company Limited (TRCL), [2] an arts and creative not-for-profit organisation in 2014 and is currently managed by TRCL’s subsidiary, Global Cultural Alliance [3] from 2015. Spotlight Singapore combines artistic, economic and educational activities, with the objective of creating understanding, dialogue and sustainable collaborations between the arts and business communities of Singapore and her counterparts. [1]

Spotlight Singapore began as an international showcase for Singapore artists and their works. The programme subsequently grew to become a "business-friendly" event utilising cultural diplomacy. [4]

It began in 2006 in Hong Kong as a cultural exchange programme, [5] and travelled to Tokyo in December 2006 with a business element introduced. [1] By the third edition, which was held in Moscow in June 2008, Spotlight Singapore had an intensive 4-day cultural-business programme that introduced the Russian capital to Singapore's lifestyle, and enabled the delegates to meet and seek out business opportunities while developing friendship with their counterparts through the exchange of cultures. [1]

In 2011, Spotlight Singapore hosted the programme in South Africa [6]

With plans to venture into the European markets, Bratislava and Prague, capital cities of Slovakia and the Czech Republic respectively, were chosen as Spotlight Singapore's fifth destination in 2012. [7] In 2015, Spotlight Singapore held its sixth edition in Mexico City. In 2018, this programme will be hosted in India, Delhi as a celebration of the 50 years of partnership between ASEAN and India.

Events

Hong Kong

Spotlight Singapore was first launched in Hong Kong in January 2006 on invitation from the Hong Kong Fringe Club, as part of the City Festival. [5] The programme for Spotlight Singapore in Hong Kong consisted of Sound Thinking, a 10-minute work commissioned for electronica and from four vacuum cleaners and the Earshot Exhibition that showcased key Singapore literary works and an exhibition of Singapore poetry.

Tokyo

Spotlight Singapore in Tokyo was held at the Mori Arts Centre at Roppongi Hills from 5 to 7 December 2008, invited by the Japanese Mori Group of companies. [4] The event incorporated more business-friendly elements, with a delegation of 40 businessmen. The programme presented Generation/s, a specially commissioned inter-disciplinary music-theatre work composed by Iskandar Ismail, a Cultural Medallion recipient.

Moscow

Spotlight Singapore was invited to Russia by Embassy of Singapore in Moscow. [8] It was presented at the 532-seat Theatre Hall of Moscow International House of Music with an 80% house, and was attended by Singapore Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong and Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Sultanov. [9] The event included the collaboration of Singapore artists and the famed Russian violinist Tatiana Grindenko and her ensemble Opus Posth in the Russian premiere of Generation/s, directed by Singapore Talent, Ivan Heng, and fused with Iskandar Ismail's score of an ensemble of 30. Spotlight Singapore brought 100 Singapore businessmen to Moscow [8] for the event's 4-day business exploration programme and developed the large-scale business exploration programme through a partnership with International Enterprise Singapore, supported by the Skolkovo Moscow School of Management, Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Russian Federation, Opora Russia, Singapore Business Federation and Singapore Manufacturers' Federation. [9]

Cape Town

Spotlight Singapore will host a programme at Cape Town, South Africa, from 16 March to 19 March 2011. [10] Co-organised by The Arts House and Asian Culture Enterprise Singapore with Raintree Solutions as the South African partner, Spotlight Singapore in Cape Town's 4-day programme includes artistic collaborations and presentations in music, literature [11] and design, business networking sessions, industry tours and breakout sessions.

Bratislava-Prague

In line with its focus on emerging economies, and with various Singapore companies expressing an interest to establish their presence in the European market, Spotlight Singapore spun off the Spotlight Singapore Young Entrepreneurs Series (YES) to Bratislava and Prague from 23 to 29 September 2012. For Spotlight Singapore YES the arts and culture components had been designed to reflect a mentor-mentee relationship, a transfer of experience and knowledge from one generation to another and for an exchange between cultures. Young and aspiring entrepreneurs from various Polytechnics and tertiary education institutes also participated enthusiastically. Through both the music and visual/public art events, Spotlight Singapore YES not only showcased Singapore’s rich and diverse arts and cultural heritage but also the readiness of the next generation to engage with the various cultures of the world. Mexico City

Spotlight Singapore Mexico City was held to celebrate 40 years of bilateral relations between Singapore and Mexico, which was attended by over 100 artists, business people, political leaders and students. This edition saw the creation of Pasar Singapura, a specially conceived interchange of music, visual arts and cuisine from Singapore and Mexico in a cultural marketplace held at Biblioteca de Mexico, an event that was sponsored by Temasek.

The delegation also visited iconic places of historical significance as well as business forums.

The National Arts Council (NAC) is a statutory board established on 15 October 1991 to oversee the development of arts in Singapore. It is under the purview of the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth. The NAC provides grants, scholarships, awards and platforms for arts practitioners, as well as arts education and programmes for the general public.

Dance in Singapore comprises traditional and contemporary forms. It has a relatively short history of creative, artistic and professional dance. The range of dance reflects the cultural diversity of Singapore. There is a consistent struggle between the rejection and acceptance of western dance influences and the re-emphasis of ethnic cultures from time to time. The Singapore identity through dance is a challenging one often on an outward looking perception rather than the acceptance and recognition of indigenous/original creativity. Notable non-profit artistic dance legacy include ECNAD and Arts Fission Company.

Xinyao is a genre of songs that is unique to Singapore. It is a contemporary Mandarin vocal genre that emerged and rose to fame in Singapore between the late 1970s to 1980s. Xinyao songs are composed and sung by Singaporeans and it is an outlet for them to express their thoughts and feelings around themes like friendships or love stories. Xinyao is a Chinese noun comprising two words: Xīn (新) which is an abbreviation for Singapore, and yáo (谣) for song. The extended form is Xīnjiāpō gēyáo (新加坡歌谣), which simply means "Singapore songs".

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Liberatum</span> Organization

Liberatum is an international cultural diplomacy organisation, multimedia and cultural content company founded by Pablo Ganguli in 2001. It creates and presents multidisciplinary artistic platforms and promotes contemporary arts, film, media, literature and culture worldwide through its own festivals, films, summits and other programming. Liberatum champions human rights, freedom of expression and women in creativity through its platforms across the world.

Kuo Pao Kun was a playwright, theatre director, and arts activist in Singapore who wrote and directed both Mandarin and English plays. He founded three arts and drama centres in Singapore, conducted and organised a number of drama seminars and workshops, and mentored Singaporean and foreign directors and artists.

Goh Soo Khim is a Singaporean ballerina and a doyen in Singapore’s dance scene. She is also the co-founder and artistic director of Singapore Dance Theatre, and the elder sister of late ballet maestro Goh Choo San. She is also credited for the development of ballet in Singapore, and for nurturing many successful dancers under her tutelage, to become successful dancers, soloists and even choreographers over the years.

Czech Centres is an organization of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic consisting of offices in 22 countries throughout three continents. It was established for the promotion of the Czech history, culture, language, tourism and trade abroad. It is considered an active instrument of foreign policy of the Czech Republic through public diplomacy.

The Istituto Italiano di Cultura, the Italian Cultural Institute in English, is a worldwide non-profit organization created by the Italian government. It promotes Italian culture and is involved in the teaching of the Italian language. The creation of the institute was in response to the desire for a deeper understanding of Italian culture throughout many continents. By organising cultural activities it supports the work carried out by the Italian Embassies and Consulates. There are 85 Italian Cultural Institutes throughout major cities around the world.

Iskandar Jalil is a Singapore ceramist. He was awarded the Cultural Medallion for Visual Arts in 1988.

Jeremiah Choy is an actor, writer, director and choreographer.

Korean Cultural Centers are non-profit institutions aligned with the Government of South Korea that aim to promote Korean culture and facilitate cultural exchanges.

Petra Štefanková is a Slovak illustrator, digital artist, designer and art director. She has worked in the animation, advertising and publishing industry.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Sun Chan (Chen Shen)</span>

Sun Chan is a self-taught artist who is known for his unique Chinese character motifs. Born in Lima, Peru, in 1932 to an overseas Chinese family, he was brought back to Fóshān, Guǎngdōng China to study the Chinese language at the age of five. At this time Chan first became fascinated with Chinese characters. He has always loved calligraphy and painting but was unfortunately deprived of an education after the second grade due to the break out of the Pacific War. He went through considerable hardship in the subsequent years and later moved to Hong Kong, where he worked his way from the ground up and established himself as a successful entrepreneur.

Iskandar Mirza Ismail was a prominent Singaporean musician who worked as a composer, arranger, conductor, music director, recording producer, performer and educator in his long career. In recognition of his extensive contributions to the music scene of Singapore, he was awarded the Cultural Medallion in 2008.
