The Motocross des Nations is an annual team motocross race, where riders representing their country meet at what is billed as the "Olympics of Motocross". The event has been staged since 1947, where the team of Bill Nicholson, Fred Rist and Bob Ray, representing Great Britain, took home the Chamberlain Trophy for the first time.
FIM Motocross World Championship is the premier championship of motocross racing, organized by the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM), divided into two distinct classes: MXGP and MX2. Clément Desalle is a Belgian former professional motocross racer. He competed in the Motocross World Championships from 2006 to 2020. Desalle raced in the premier 450cc class for his entire motocross career, finishing second four times, third twice and fourth twice.
Jeffrey Herlings (born 12 September 1994) is a Dutch professional motocross racer. He has competed in the Motocross World Championships since 2010. Herlings is notable for winning the 2012, 2013, and 2016 MX2 Championships; and the 2018, 2021 MXGP Championships he considered to be the greatest MX2 racer of all time with the nickname The Bullet.

In the main MXGP class, Romain Febvre was the defending champion after taking his first title in 2015. In the MX2 class, Tim Gajser was the defending champion, after taking his first title in 2015.

In the main MXGP class, Tim Gajser was the defending champion after taking his first title in 2016. In the MX2 class, Jeffrey Herlings was the 2016 champion, but he moved up to the MXGP class after taking his third MX2 title.

The 2021 Motocross des Nations is a motocross race to be held on 25 and 26 September 2021 in Mantova, Italy. The race usually takes place after the MXGP season, however because the 2021 GP schedule runs from April through November, the MXoN will take place in the middle of the MXGP series.

The 2022 Motocross des Nations was a motocross race held on 24 and 25 September 2022 in Buchanan, United States. This was the fifth time that the event was held in the United States and the second time at this track. Italy went into the event as the defending champions after winning their third title in 2021.
