Jerry Meter (born c. 1957) is a former American football player and coach.
Meter's father, Bernard Meter, played football for Notre Dame in the 1940s.
Jerry Meter attended Bloomfield Hills Andover High School where, at 6 foot, 4 inches, he was selected as a first-team end on the Detroit Free Press All Metro Team in 1974. [1] He enrolled at the University of Michigan and played linebacker for Bo Schembechler from 1976 to 1978. [2] [3] [4] In 1977, he received the Frederick Matthaei Award leadership, drive and achievement on the athletic field and in the classroom. He was also selected as the co-captain of the 1978 Michigan Wolverines football team. [5] He was also selected by both the Associated Press and the United Press International as a second-team defensive end on the 1978 All-Big Ten Conference football team. Meter's last game for Michigan was the 1979 Rose Bowl against the USC. Meter played a key role in the famous "phantom touchdown" incident in the 1979 Rose Bowl. USC's Charles White fumbled the ball near the goal line, and Meter recovered the ball at the one-yard line. Replays showed that White had fumbled before crossing the goal line, but officials called it a touchdown, and USC won the game, 17–10. [6]
Meter returned to Michigan as an assistant football coach for eight years from 1980 to 1987. [7] [8] [9]
Meter worked for Steelcase Inc., starting in 1987. He lives in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan with his wife, Lisa. They have four children: Nick, Erin, Meggie, and Ben. [10]
James Joseph Harbaugh is an American football coach and former quarterback who is the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers of the National Football League (NFL). He previously served as the head coach at the University of Michigan from 2015 to 2023, the San Francisco 49ers from 2011 to 2014, Stanford University from 2007 to 2010 and the University of San Diego from 2004 to 2006.
Richard Max Leach is an American former college football player and professional baseball player.
Otto Paul Pommerening was an American football player. A native of Ann Arbor, Michigan, he played college football as a tackle for the University of Michigan Wolverines from 1927 to 1928. He was a consensus first-team All-American in 1928. He later worked as an engineer for the Wayne County Road Commission.
Thomas Wilcher is a college football administrator for Michigan State University and former high school athletic coach and teacher as well as a former National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I track and field and college football athlete for the University of Michigan. He was the NCAA Division I Men's Indoor Track and Field Championships national champion in the indoor 55 m hurdles and a three-time NCAA All-American in track and field. Wilcher was also a running back for the Michigan Wolverines football team from 1983–1986. In his redshirt senior year, he was a member of the Big Ten Conference football champion team as well as a 110 m hurdles Big Ten individual champion. Wilcher was a 9th round selection by the San Diego Chargers in the 1987 NFL Draft.
The 1969 Michigan Wolverines football team was an American football team that represented the University of Michigan in the 1969 Big Ten Conference football season. In their first year under head coach Bo Schembechler, the Wolverines compiled an 8–3 record, played in the 1970 Rose Bowl, and finished the season ranked No. 9 in the final AP poll and No. 8 in the final UPI poll.
Donovan Jamelle Warren is a former American football cornerback. Warren was signed by the New York Jets as an undrafted free agent following the 2010 NFL Draft and has also played with the Detroit Lions, Pittsburgh Steelers and Chicago Bears. He attended the University of Michigan through his junior year.
Brandon Lee Graham is an American football defensive end for the Philadelphia Eagles of the National Football League (NFL). He was selected by the Eagles in the first round of the 2010 NFL draft with the thirteenth selection in the draft and the first from the Big Ten Conference. He was an All-American college football player at the University of Michigan.

In their 17th year under head coach was Bo Schembechler, the Wolverines compiled a 10–1–1 record, outscored all opponents by a combined total of 342 to 98, defeated five ranked opponents, suffered its sole loss against Iowa in a game matching the #1 and #2 teams in the AP Poll, defeated Nebraska in the 1986 Fiesta Bowl, and were ranked #2 in the final AP and Coaches Polls.

In their 10th season under head coach Bo Schembechler, the Wolverines compiled a 10–2 record, tied for the Big Ten championship, outscored opponents by a total of 372 to 105, and were ranked No. 5 in the final AP and UPI polls. The defense allowed only 94.6 passing yards per game and ranked second in the country in scoring defense, allowing an average of only 8.75 points per game.
The 1977 Michigan Wolverines football team was an American football team that represented the University of Michigan in the 1977 Big Ten Conference football season. In its ninth year under head coach Bo Schembechler, the team compiled a 10–2 record, tied with Ohio State for the Big Ten Conference championship, and outscored opponents by a total of 353 to 124. The Wolverines were ranked No. 1 in the AP Poll midway through the season but were upset by the unranked Minnesota Golden Gophers. In the final game of the regular season, Michigan beat No. 4 Ohio State but lost to No. 13 Washington in the 1978 Rose Bowl. In the final AP and UPI polls, Michigan was ranked No. 9 and No. 8, respectively.
The 1973 Michigan Wolverines football team represented the University of Michigan in the 1973 Big Ten Conference football season. In his fifth year as Michigan's head coach, Bo Schembechler led the team to a 10–0–1 record. It was Michigan's first undefeated season since 1948. The Wolverines outscored their opponents 330 to 68. Michigan was ranked No. 6 in both of the major post-season polls. Two other selectors, the National Championship Foundation and the Poling System, recognize Michigan as a co-national champion for the 1973 season.
The 1979 Rose Bowl was a college football bowl game played in Pasadena, California, on January 1, 1979. It was the 65th Rose Bowl Game. The USC Trojans, champions of the Pacific-10 Conference, defeated the Michigan Wolverines, (co) champions of the Big Ten Conference, 17–10.USC running back Charles White and Michigan quarterback Rick Leach were named the Players of the Game.
The 1980 Michigan State Spartans football team was an American football team that represented Michigan State University in the 1980 Big Ten Conference football season. The Spartans finished in ninth place in the Big Ten Conference, compiled a 3–8 overall record, and were outscored by their opponents by a combined total of 278 to 221. The team's .273 winning percentage was the worst in program history since the winless 1917 season. The team played its home games at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing, Michigan.
Demetrius Brown is a former American football player. He was a quarterback for the University of Michigan Wolverines football team from 1985 to 1989 and a starting quarterback for the 1987 and 1988 teams. Brown was the first Michigan quarterback to lead the Wolverines to bowl victories in consecutive seasons, with victories over Alabama in the 1988 Hall of Fame Bowl and USC in the 1989 Rose Bowl. During the 1987 season, Brown also set Michigan school records with seven interceptions in a game and 16 interceptions in a season.
Mike Gillette is a former American football and baseball player. He was a placekicker for the University of Michigan Wolverines football team from 1985 to 1988 and a punter for the 1988 team. He also played baseball for Michigan, and later played professionally in the minor leagues. Gillette finished his college football career is the leading scorer in Michigan football history with 295 points on 53 field goals, 130 extra points, and one touchdown. He also set Michigan records for the longest field goal and most field goals in a single game (five).
The 1985 Illinois Fighting Illini football team was an American football team that represented the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign during the 1985 Big Ten Conference football season. In their sixth year under head coach Mike White, the Illini compiled a 6–5–1 record and finished in third place in the Big Ten Conference. Illinois was invited to the Peach Bowl, where the Illini lost to Army.
The 1971 Eastern Michigan Hurons football team represented Eastern Michigan University as an independent during the 1971 NCAA College Division football season. In their fifth season under head coach Dan Boisture, the Hurons compiled a 7–1–2 record and outscored their opponents, 228 to 85. Dave Pureifory was the team captain. The Hurons were undefeated in the regular season, were ranked No. 3 in the NCAA College Division, allowed only one touchdown in the last five games, and advanced to the College Division quarterfinals. In the first bowl game in the program's 79-year existence, the Hurons lost to Louisiana Tech in the inaugural Pioneer Bowl in Wichita Falls, Texas, by a score of 14 to 3. Houston Booth was the team's starting quarterback.
The 1975 Northern Michigan Wildcats football team was an American football team that represented Northern Michigan University as an independent during the 1975 NCAA Division II football season. In their second year under head coach Gil Krueger, the Wildcats compiled a 13–1 record and won the NCAA Division II national championship, defeating Western Kentucky in the Division II championship game. The previous season, the 1974 Wildcats were winless at 0–10.

Aidan Joseph Bernardi Hutchinson is an American football defensive end for the Detroit Lions of the National Football League (NFL). Hutchinson was a unanimous All-American at the University of Michigan, and the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy in 2021. He was selected with the second overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft by the Detroit Lions, and named to the All-Rookie Team in 2022. Hutchinson was voted to his first Pro Bowl in 2023.
