Gerald E. "Jerry" Thomas (born 1935) is a former baseball pitcher. He won the 1956 College World Series Most Outstanding Player award while a junior at University of Minnesota. [1] He is one of three players from University of Minnesota to win that award. The others are John Erickson and Dave Winfield.
He was an All-American in 1956.
Thomas played professionally from 1957 to 1960,never reaching the majors.
He was inducted into the University of Minnesota Sports Hall of Fame in 1995.
The Minneapolis Marines were an early professional football team that existed from 1905 until 1928. The team did not play in 1918 or 1925 to 1926 and was later resurrected from 1929 to 1930 under the Minneapolis Red Jackets name. The Marines were originally owned locally by the Marine Athletic Club of Minneapolis and later by Minneapolitans John Dunn and Val Ness. The Marines played their earliest games in the sandlots of Minneapolis and at Minnehaha Park. They made their first appearance at Lexington Park in 1909 and Nicollet Park in 1910. From 1912 to 1914,the team rented the North Minneapolis Athletic Association grounds at 25th Avenue North and Washington Avenue in Minneapolis,a site now overrun by Interstate 94. The Marines moved to Nicollet Park in 1915 and played there until they disbanded as the Red Jackets in 1930. The Minneapolis Marines were the first Minnesota-based team to join the National Football League,predating the Duluth Eskimos (1923) and Minnesota Vikings (1961).
The Minnesota Golden Gophers are the college sports teams of the University of Minnesota. The university fields a total of 21 teams in both men's and women's sports and competes in the Big Ten Conference.
John Edward Mayasich is an American former ice hockey player of Croatian descent. He was a member of the U.S. ice hockey team that won a silver medal at the 1956 Winter Olympics and a gold medal at the 1960 Winter Olympics. He also played for Team USA at the IIHF World Championships in 1958,1961,1962,1966 and 1969. He was inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame in 1997.
Richard Walther Siebert was an American first baseman in Major League Baseball who had an 11-year career from 1932,1936–1945. He played for the Brooklyn Dodgers and St. Louis Cardinals,both of the National League,and the Philadelphia A's of the American League. He was elected to the American League All-Star team in 1943.
Terry Lee Steinbach is an American former professional baseball player and coach. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a catcher from 1986 to 1999,most notably as a member of the Oakland Athletics team that won three consecutive American League pennants and a World Series championship in 1989. He played his final three seasons with the Minnesota Twins. A three-time All-Star player,Steinbach won the 1988 All-Star Game MVP Award and caught two no-hitters during his career.
Paul Robert Giel was an American college football and professional baseball player from Winona,Minnesota. He was an All-American in both sports at the University of Minnesota.

Edwin Clarence Widseth was an American professional football player who was a tackle for the New York Giants of the National Football League (NFL) for four seasons. He played college football for the Minnesota Golden Gophers football team of the University of Minnesota,where he was a consensus All-American in 1935 and 1936. Widseth was drafted by the New York Giants in the first round of the 1937 NFL Draft,and was chosen for the Pro Bowl in 1938. He was later inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
The Minnesota Golden Gophers men's ice hockey team is the college ice hockey team at the Twin Cities campus of the University of Minnesota. They are members of the Big Ten Conference and compete in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I ice hockey. The Golden Gophers are one of the most prominent and storied programs in college hockey,having made 41 NCAA Tournament appearances and 23 trips to the Frozen Four. They have won five NCAA national championships,in 1974,1976,1979,2002 and 2003. The team also shared the 1929 National Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship with Yale,and captured the national Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) championship for amateur hockey in 1940.
Gerald Donald Kindall was an American professional baseball player and college baseball player and coach. He was primarily a second baseman in Major League Baseball (MLB) who appeared in 742 games played over nine seasons for the Chicago Cubs,Cleveland Indians (1962–64),and Minnesota Twins (1964–65). After his playing career,he became the head baseball coach of the University of Arizona Wildcats,winning 860 games and three College World Series (CWS) championships over 24 seasons (1973–1996). Kindall batted and threw right-handed and was listed as 6 feet 2 inches (1.88 m) tall and 175 pounds (79 kg).
The Minnesota Golden Gophers men's basketball team represents the University of Minnesota in NCAA Division I college basketball competition. The Golden Gophers competes in the Big Ten Conference and play their home games at the Williams Arena.
Marshall W. "Marsh" Ryman was a collegiate hockey coach and athletic director at the University of Minnesota. Ryman played baseball and hockey for Minnesota and was the hockey team captain for the 1931–32 season. Ryman coached the Minnesota Golden Gophers men's hockey team in the 1955–56 season to a 16–12–1 record while John Mariucci coached the United States national men's ice hockey team at the 1956 Winter Olympics. Subsequently,Ryman served as the national team coach himself,from 1958–59. in 1960,Ryman was a referee at the 1960 Winter Olympics. Later,Ryman became the Gophers' athletic director from 1963 to 1972,when the University forced Ryman to resign. He won the 1972 George Eldridge Distinguished Service Award for his work in that position. In 1978,he was elected to the National Association of College Athletic Directors Hall of Fame. Ryman died of pneumonia in St. Louis Park,Minnesota in 1992. He is interred in Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis.

John Anderson is an American college baseball coach and former pitcher. He is the former head baseball coach at the University of Minnesota. Anderson played college baseball at the University of Minnesota from 1974 to 1975,until injuries ended his career. In 38 seasons,Anderson has led the Golden Gophers to a record of 1,317 wins,887 losses and three ties. In the Big Ten he has led Golden Gophers to a record of 592 wins and 351 losses in that same span.
James John Rantz is an American former professional baseball player and executive. He was the Minnesota Twins' farm system director from 1986–2012,holding the title of "Director of Minor Leagues." When he retired after his 27th consecutive season in the post,Rantz was one of the longest-tenured farm system directors in Major League Baseball;it was his 53rd consecutive season with the Twins' organization. From 1971 through 1985,Rantz was assistant minor league director under George Brophy. As such,during his career,he sent multiple generations of home-grown players to the Twins,and contributed materially to the team's 1987 and 1991 world titles and its run of playoff teams during the first decade of the 21st century.
