Carlton Ernest Fisk,nicknamed "Pudge" and "The Commander",is an American former professional baseball player. He played in Major League Baseball as a catcher from 1969 to 1993 for the Boston Red Sox and Chicago White Sox (1981–1993). In 1972,he was the first player to be unanimously voted American League (AL) Rookie of the Year. Fisk is best known for his game-winning home run in the 12th inning of Game 6 of the 1975 World Series,during which he memorably waved his arms hoping for the batted ball to remain fair.

After being traded as a minor league prospect by the Seattle Mariners,Varitek played his entire 15-year career in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Red Sox. A three-time All-Star and Gold Glove Award winner at catcher,as well as a Silver Slugger Award winner,Varitek was part of both the 2004 World Series and 2007 World Series Championship teams,and was viewed widely as one of the team's leaders. In December 2004 he was named the captain of the Red Sox,only their fourth captain since 1923. He was a switch-hitter.
