"Jika" (Zulu: "Twist") is a song by South African house band Mi Casa. It was released as the lead single from their second studio album, Su Casa (2013), and was the most played song for 12 straight weeks on several radio stations in South Africa, including Metro FM, 5FM, YFM, Ukhozi FM, and Gagasi 99.5 FM. [2] "Jika" peaked at number one on BBC Radio 1Xtra, a digital radio station in the United Kingdom, and topped the MTV Base Official SA Top 10 chart for the week of 31 October through 6 November 2013. [3] [4] Moreover, it peaked at number one on Trace TV's 30 Urban Hits. [5]

Live performances

Mi Casa performed "Jika" during their tour of several African countries, including Kenya, Swaziland, Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Tanzania, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Uganda, and Zimbabwe. [7] [8] In September 2013, they performed the song to celebrate Cape Town International Conventional Centre's 10th birthday. [9] On 6 April 2014, the band performed the song at the Durban Botanic Gardens. [10]

Critical reception

"Jika" received positive reviews from music critics. A writer for the website Tunez.co.za called the track "melodious and catchy" and said its production is "rhythmic, engaging and creative". [11] The website Red Flag said "Jika" "brings the playful Mi Casa style to life" and commended the song's dance routine. [12] South Africa's edition of Rolling Stone magazine described "Jika" as a "delightfully feelgood fable about keeping it real to get the girl of your dreams." [13]

Accolades

"Jika" was nominated for Song of the Year at the 2014 Metro FM Music Awards. [14] It was also nominated for Song of the Year at the 2014 MTV Africa Music Awards. [15] Moreover, the song was nominated for Remix of the Year at the 20th Annual SAMAs. [16]

Mi Casa is a house trio based in Johannesburg, South Africa and consisting of three members, Dr. Duda, J'Something, and Mo-T (trumpeter). The band was formed in early 2011 in Johannesburg when all three future members were at a night lounge and decided to perform together.

Latoya Nontokozo Buthelezi, who is known professionally as Toya Delazy, is a London-based South African singer, producer, pianist, dancer and performer from KwaZulu-Natal. She is known for her music genre called Afro Rave, which fuses techno, drum, bass and beats with Zulu lyricism. Delazy was nominated for Best International Act (Africa) at the 2013 BET Awards. Her debut studio album, Due Drop, was supported by the singles "Pump It On", "Love Is in the Air", "Are You Gonna Stay?", "Heart" and "Memoriam". Following the album's release, Delazy took home two awards at the 2013 SAMAs, including Newcomer of the Year.

Themba Sekowe, known professionally as DJ Maphorisa, is a South African DJ, record producer, singer, and songwriter. As a record producer with a blend of house music, amapiano and afropop, he has worked with and has received production credits from several notable artists, including Wizkid, Sizwe Alakine, Kwesta, Uhuru, Drake, Black Coffee, Major Lazer, Runtown, C4 Pedro, TRESOR, Kabza De Small, Era Istrefi, Mpura, Young Stunna and Killer Kau. Jabulani Hadebe, known professionally as Sjava, is a South African singer, rapper, and actor. He began his acting career in 2005, starring in several drama series and films including uGugu no Andile (2009). He then rose to prominence on the drama series Zone 14, where he starred for three consecutive seasons, Isibaya and the second season of eHostela. Sjava ventured into the music industry and signed to record label Ambitiouz Entertainment. He gained mainstream popularity after he was featured on Miss Pru's acclaimed song "Ameni" in 2015.
