Jill Goldthwait is an American politician from Maine. [1] Goldthwait grew up in New Jersey and obtained a degree in nursing in California. She served a stint as a Peace Corps volunteer in Tonga. She moved to Maine in 1978 and settled in Bar Harbor,Maine on Mount Desert Island. She worked as an emergency department nurse at Mount Desert Island Hospital and served on the Bar Harbor Town Council for 9 years prior to running for Maine State Senate. [1] An unenrolled (independent),she won 4 terms (1994-2002) in the State Senate before being unable to run for re-election due to term-limits. [2] She then took a job with Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor,which later turned into a permanent position as Director of Government Relations. [3] In 2005,Goldthwait was named by Governor John Baldacci to the state's newly created Creative Economy Council. [4]

The village was established by Abraham Somes who was the first European settler on the island. It attracted many people because of its mills and quarries. The MDI Biological Laboratory (MDIBL),formerly known as Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory is an independent non-profit biomedical research institution founded in 1898 and located in Salisbury Cove,Maine,on Mount Desert Island. Its mission is to improve human health and well- being through basic research,education,and development ventures that transform discoveries into cures. In 2013,the Laboratory was designated a Center for Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) by the National Institutes of Health,which awarded the Laboratory a grant of $13 million over five years to expand the institution's research program. The MDI Biological Laboratory has a full-time staff of 63,and will offer 23 research training courses in 2014.

In 2013,she successfully led a social media campaign to prompt fishing gear producer Grundéns to produce commercial fishing gear for women. In June 2014,McDonald became the first woman to serve on the Maine Department of Marine Resources Lobster Advisory Council (LAC). McDonald resigned her House seat effective on May 10,2022,the day after the last Legislative Day of the Second Regular Session of the 130th Maine Legislature.
