The National Health Service (NHS) is the umbrella term for the publicly funded healthcare systems of the United Kingdom (UK). Since 1948,they have been funded out of general taxation. There are three systems which are referred to using the "NHS" name. Health and Social Care in Northern Ireland was created separately and is often locally referred to as "the NHS". The four systems were established in 1948 as part of major social reforms following the Second World War. Dame Anne Marie Rafferty FRCN is a British nurse,academic and researcher. She is professor of nursing policy and former dean of the Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing,Midwifery and Palliative Care at King's College London. She served as President of the Royal College of Nursing from 2019 to 2021.
The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) is the British government’s major funder of clinical,public health,social care and translational research. With a budget of over £1.2 billion in 2020–21,its mission is to "improve the health and wealth of the nation through research". The NIHR was established in 2006 under the government's Best Research for Best Health strategy,and is funded by the Department of Health and Social Care. Sandall leads the Maternal Health Services and Policy Research Group in King's Health Partners Women’s Health Academic Centre and is also a lead for the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) South London Applied Research Collaboration. She has authored several Cochrane reviews on midwife-led settings and hundreds of peer-reviewed papers. Her contribution to midwifery and women's health was awarded with an CBE. She also received an honorary doctorate in health sciences from the University of Technology Sydney in 2014.
