James Glennister Cox AM (born 1 October 1945) is a former Tasmanian Labor politician and member of the Tasmanian House of Assembly who represented the electorate of Bass. He held office from 1989 to 1992,and again from 1996 to 2010.
Before entering Parliament,Cox co-hosted The Saturday Night Show on TNT-9 with Graeme Goodings [1] and was a radio announcer in northern Tasmania. [2] Cox won Logie Awards for most popular male on Tasmanian television in 1979 [3] and 1981. [4]
Cox ran in the 1989 Tasmanian state election. He defeated Labor incumbent Gill James and was seated in the House of Assembly. [5]
In 1989,Tasmanian media magnate Edmund Rouse,Chairman of forestry enterprise Gunns,attempted to bribe Cox with $110,000 to cross the floor of parliament in an attempt to prevent Labor forming government in alliance with the five Green Independents,and attempting to secure the return of the pro-logging Liberal Party government of Robin Gray. [2] [6] Cox reported the bribery attempt to police,and ultimately Rouse served 18 months in jail.
James ran against Cox again in 1992,defeating him. In 1996,Cox ran against,and defeated,Tasmanian Green Lance Armstrong. [5] Cox was re-elected again in the 2002 and 2006 elections. He did not run in the 2010 elections and retired. [5]
Cox was made a member of the Order of Australia in 2017. [7]
Robin Trevor Gray is a former Australian politician who was Premier of Tasmania from 1982 to 1989. A Liberal,he was elected Liberal state leader in 1981 and in 1982 defeated the Labor government of Harry Holgate on a policy of "state development," particularly the building of the Franklin Dam,a hydroelectric dam on the Franklin River. He was only the second non-Labor premier to hold the post in 48 years,and the first in 51 years to govern in majority.
Paul Anthony Lennon is a Labor Party politician. He was Premier of Tasmania from 21 March 2004 until his resignation on 26 May 2008. He was member of the Tasmanian House of Assembly for the seat of Franklin from 1990 until officially resigning on 27 May 2008. He left office abruptly after his preferred premier rating fell to 17%,largely as a result of perceptions of corruption in his government's fast-tracked approval of the Gunns Bell Bay Pulp Mill proposal,which had effectively bypassed normal planning procedure.

Douglas Ackley Lowe AM was the 35th Premier of Tasmania,from 1 December 1977 to 11 November 1981. His time as Premier coincided with controversy over a proposal to build a dam on Tasmania's Gordon River,which would have flooded parts of the Franklin River. The ensuing crisis saw Lowe overthrown as Premier and resign from the Labor Party,acting as an independent for the remainder of his political career.

William Edward Felix Hodgman is an Australian diplomat and former politician who has been the High Commissioner of Australia to Singapore since February 2021. He was the 45th Premier of Tasmania and a member for the Division of Franklin in the Tasmanian House of Assembly from the 2002 state election until his resignation in January 2020. He became premier following the 2014 state election,having been Leader of the Opposition since 2006. He was re-elected to a second term in government following victory in the 2018 state election. In March 2018,he succeeded Angus Bethune as the longest-serving leader in the history of the Tasmanian Liberals. He resigned as the Premier of Tasmania,the Leader of the Tasmanian Liberals and Member of the Parliament of Tasmania on 20 January 2020. In April 2020,Hodgman was appointed as the chair of Australian Business Growth Fund by federal Treasurer Josh Frydenberg. Hodgman is from Hobart and was educated at the University of Tasmania.
The 1989 Tasmanian state election was held on 13 May 1989 in the Australian state of Tasmania to elect 35 members of the Tasmanian House of Assembly. The election used the Hare-Clark proportional representation system —seven members were elected from each of five electorates. The quota required for election was 12.5% in each division.

The 16-year incumbent Labor government,led by the Premier of Tasmania Lara Giddings,sought to win a fifth consecutive term against the Liberal opposition,led by Opposition Leader Will Hodgman. Also contesting the election was the Greens led by Nick McKim. The Palmer United Party made a significant effort in the election.
