Jim Wilke is a radio host and producer in Seattle, Washington. In 1988 he began hosting Jazz Northwest from the public radio station KNKX in Seattle. [1] From 1984 to 2014, he hosted the syndicated radio program Jazz After Hours. [2]

Career

Wilke grew up in New London, Iowa and graduated from the University of Iowa in 1959. At school he played saxophone in a jazz band. [3] He moved to Seattle and started at KING-FM in 1961. He produced Showcase of the Lively Arts with Don Shannon. In 1962 The Penthouse jazz club opened with a phone line from the club to KING-FM. Wilke set up a mixing board near the piano and four microphones on stage. Ernestine Anderson was the first singer to be broadcast.

Wilke taught jazz history at Cornish College of the Arts from 1975–2002. He taught radio broadcasting at Bellevue Community College on their station KBCS-FM from 1977–1983. From 1978–1993, he worked for the Bellevue Parks and Community Service, coordinating music festivals and outdoor concerts. During 1981–2001 he worked at KUOW-FM. In 1985 he started the recording studio Hatchcover [4] , the production company responsible for Jazz Northwest.

He records at the Seattle Art Museum for the Earshot Jazz Art of Jazz program. [5] [6] Note that this program was ended approx. late 2019.

Wilke has announced his retirement from the broadcasting industry as of 24-Aug-2023. [7]

Wilke has worked with jazz record labels to release recordings he made in the early 1960s. These include music by Johnny Griffin, Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, Wes Montgomery, Cannonball Adderley. [8] [9]

Studios are located on University Way in Seattle's University District, while the transmitter is on Capitol Hill.

Robert “Bob” Perkins is an American retired radio personality who worked as a jazz program host and DJ in Philadelphia. His radio career began in 1964 in Detroit, Michigan. In 1969, Perkins began working for Philadelphia's WDAS, where he worked for 19 years before moving to WHYY in 1988. In 1997, he joined Temple University's WRTI Radio, where he worked until his retirement in 2023.

KPNW-FM is a commercial radio station in Seattle, Washington. The station is owned by Hubbard Broadcasting and airs an adult album alternative radio format. Hubbard also owns four other radio stations in the Seattle metropolitan area. The studios and offices are located at Newport Corporate Center on 131st Avenue SE in Bellevue.

KVTI is a National Public Radio affiliate station operated by Northwest Public Radio, licensed to Tacoma, Washington, and operates at 90.9 MHz with an ERP of 51 kW. As an "NPR & Classical Music" station, it broadcasts NPR news, local and syndicated classical music shows, and other public radio programming. The station is owned by Clover Park Technical College in Lakewood, but since 2010, has been operated by the Edward R. Murrow College of Communication at Washington State University. It is one of three NPR member stations in the Seattle/Tacoma area, with fellow Tacoma-based station KNKX and Seattle-based KUOW-FM being the other two stations.

KXPA is a commercial AM radio station licensed to Bellevue, Washington, and serving the Seattle metropolitan area. The songwriting is strongly influenced by Latin and Mediterranean music, and is mostly nylon-guitar driven, influenced by such artists as Yanni and The Gipsy Kings. Regarding the band's songs, Stevens states, "If it isn't beautiful, it doesn't make the cut," while Bacolas describes the band's music as "passionate and beautiful."
