Joseph Cassar (born 19 May 1966),best known as Joe Cassar,was a Maltese politician who served as Minister for Health,The Elderly and Community Care. He was a Nationalist Member of Parliament until he resigned on November 1 2015,both from the Nationalist Party and Parliament.
His education started at St. Aloysius College,after which he progressed to the University of Malta. He graduated as a medical doctor in 1990. His post graduate specialisation was in psychiatry at Yale University (USA) which was followed by working as a consultant psychiatrist within the Department of Health. He is also a lecturer at the University of Malta. [ citation needed ]
During his professional career,Cassar was President of the Malta Medical Students Association,an executive member within the Medical Association of Malta,the President of Yale Psychiatry Residents Association and an active member of the International Catholic Movement. He has authored numerous papers related to psychiatry.
He represented the Nationalist Party in the Medical Board for the Maltese Electoral Commission. He contested the 2008 elections in the interest of the Nationalist Party getting elected to the House of Representatives of Malta. Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi appointed his as Parliamentary Secretary of Health in the Ministry of Social Policy,assisting Minister John Dalli. Following Dalli's resignation from the post of Minister for Social Policy,the portfolios of Health,Elderly and Community Care were assigned a Ministry. Cassar became the Minister for Health,Elderly and Community Care on 9 February 2010. Mario Galea,retained his own position as Parliamentary Secretary for the Elderly and Community Care. Cyrus Engerer is a Maltese Member of European Parliament representing the Labour Party. A gay rights activist,he was the leading spokesperson for the Yes campaign at the 2011 Maltese divorce referendum. In 2021 he was tasked with negotiating the European Parliaments historic resolution on the declaration of the European Union as an LGBTQ Freedom zone,in reaction to the establishment of so called "LGBT-Free zones" in Poland. Engerer later went on to write the European Parliaments resolution which condemned the laws in Hungary which effectively banned "LGBT propaganda" in the vicinity of schools. From 2014 till 2019 Engerer was the Prime Minister's special envoy to the European Union. He was elected as a Member of the European Parliament in November 2020. After he joined the Labour Party the Police of Malta opened an investigation against him,leading to his father's arrest,the opening of a court case against him on spreading pornography and the arrest of his mother on election day. He himself was convicted for spreading revenge porn and received a suspended two years term imprisonment. He is the partner of Partit Laburista's Member of Parliament Randolph De Battista.
Christopher Fearne is a Maltese physician and politician. He was appointed Parliamentary Secretary for Health in April 2014 and Minister for Health since April 2016. In July 2017,the Labour Party elected him as Deputy Leader for Parliamentary Affairs,thus assuming the role of Deputy Prime Minister of Malta and Leader of the House.
Miriam Dalli is a Maltese politician of the Labour Party and former journalist who has been serving as a member of the Parliament of Malta since 2020. She was previously a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) from 2014 until 2020.
Francis Zammit Dimech is a Maltese politician who served in domestic Maltese politics as a member of the House of Representatives of Malta between 1987 and 2017 and as a Member of the European Parliament from 2017 till 2019. During his tenure within Maltese politics,Zammit Dimech held office as Minister for Foreign Affairs in the government of Lawrence Gonzi from 28 November 2012,until the defeat of Gonzi's government in the 2013 Maltese general election. He previously held numerous other ministerial responsibilities including communications,infrastructure,tourism,culture,and environment. Before being appointed Foreign Affairs Minister he served as Chair of the Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee. Prior to entering politics,Francis Zammit Dimech worked as a lawyer and broadcaster.
The 2019 European Parliament election was held in Malta on 25 May 2019. 8 different political parties took part in the election,of which,only 2 won seats in the European Parliament;the Labour Party and the Nationalist Party,with 4 and 2 seats respectively.
