Martin Bladen Hawke,7th Baron Hawke,generally known as Lord Hawke,was an English amateur cricketer active from 1881 to 1911 who played for Yorkshire and England. He was born in Willingham by Stow,near Gainsborough,Lincolnshire,and died in Edinburgh. He appeared in 633 first-class matches,including five Test matches,as a righthanded batsman,scoring 16,749 runs with a highest score of 166 and held 209 catches. He scored 13 centuries and 69 half-centuries.
George Herbert Hirst was a professional English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Yorkshire County Cricket Club between 1891 and 1921,with a further appearance in 1929. One of the best all-rounders of his time,Hirst was a left arm medium-fast bowler and right-handed batsman. He played in 24 Test matches for England between 1897 and 1909,touring Australia twice. He completed the double of 1,000 runs and 100 wickets in an English cricket season 14 times,the second most of any cricketer after his contemporary and team-mate Wilfred Rhodes. One of the Wisden Cricketers of the Year for 1901,Hirst scored 36,356 runs and took 2,742 wickets in first-class cricket. In Tests,he made 790 runs and captured 59 wickets.
Jacobus Andries "Jacques" Rudolph is a former South African cricketer who played for Yorkshire,Glamorgan and in South Africa with Titans.

Lionel Charles Hamilton Palairet was an English amateur cricketer who played for Somerset and Oxford University. A graceful right-handed batsman,he was selected to play Test cricket for England twice in 1902. Contemporaries judged Palairet to have one of the most attractive batting styles of the period. His obituary in The Times described him as "the most beautiful batsman of all time". An unwillingness to tour during the English winter limited Palairet's Test appearances;contemporaries believed he deserved more Test caps.
Maurice Leyland was an English international cricketer who played 41 Test matches between 1928 and 1938. In first-class cricket,he represented Yorkshire County Cricket Club between 1920 and 1946,scoring over 1,000 runs in 17 consecutive seasons. A left-handed middle-order batsman and occasional left-arm spinner,Leyland was a Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1929.
Joseph Liam Denly is an English professional cricketer who plays for Kent County Cricket Club. He is a right-handed batsman and occasional leg break bowler who plays as a top-order batsman. Denly played age group cricket for Kent and began his professional career with the county before moving to Middlesex for three seasons between 2012 and 2014. He won the Professional Cricketers' Association Player of the Year award in 2018 and was named the season's Most Valuable Player.

Capable of hitting the ball powerfully,he combined an excellent eye with an unorthodox style to be regarded at his peak as one of England's finest batsmen.
Michael John Lumb is a former South African-born English cricketer,who played for Yorkshire,Hampshire,and Nottinghamshire at county level and England in Twenty20 International cricket and One Day International cricket. Born and raised in South Africa,Lumb is a left-handed opening batsman and a right-arm medium pace bowler. He became only the second cricketer after Dennis Amiss to score a century on ODI debut for England and ninth player overall to do so. Lumb was a member of the England team that won the 2010 ICC World Twenty20.
1870 was the 84th season of cricket in England since the foundation of Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC). It was in many ways a bridge between two eras of the game and,in a summer comparable for hot and dry weather to 1887,1911,1976 or 1995,saw W.G. Grace for the second of three successive years establish a record run aggregate,late-blooming slow bowler James Southerton become the first bowler to take 200 first-class wickets in a season and the first use of the heavy roller at Lord's. Although the heavy roller had been patented several decades earlier,its use was never seriously considered by MCC management despite many protests over the danger posed by the Lord's pitch where extremely frequent “shooters”alternated with balls that “flew”over the batsman's head. These dangerous pitches were viewed as a symbol of virility by many amateur batsmen,however;though when remembering one of W.G.’s finest innings –66 on one of the roughest Lord’s pitches against a very strong Yorkshire attack against Yorkshire –fast bowlers Freeman and Emmett wondered how the champion was not maimed or killed outright.
Christopher Robert Taylor is an English former first-class cricketer. He is a right-handed batsman and a right-arm medium-fast bowler.
James Moffat Allan was a Scottish cricketer. He was an all-rounder who bowled slow left-arm orthodox and batted right-handed and was described by his Wisden obituary as "the best all-rounder Scotland ever produced".
The Roses Match refers to any game of cricket played between Yorkshire County Cricket Club and Lancashire County Cricket Club. Yorkshire's emblem is the white rose,while Lancashire's is the red rose. The associations go back to the Wars of the Roses in the 15th century. These matches have a long and proud history and are traditionally the hardest fought matches in the English first class game,with many dour draws recorded as both teams battled to avoid the ignominy of defeat.
