Joel Basman (born 23 January 1990) is a Swiss actor best known for having played Franz Kafka in the ARD Miniseries Kafka (2024) [1]
Basman was born in Zurich, Switzerland, to a Swiss Christian mother and an Israeli-Jewish father, [2] both of whom were tailors in the Swiss fashion industry. He grew up in the neighborhood of Aussersihl and was raised bilingual, speaking Swiss-German and Hebrew. He has one older sister who resides in Israel. [3]
In 2004, he started his career and played a bold teenager named Zizou for the weekly soap opera Lüthi und Blanc .
In 2007, director Tobias Ineichen gave the main part to Basman for his film Jimmie. There, he played an autistic boy. In February 2008, he got the prize Shooting Star for his part as a Russian teenager on the film Luftibus, written by director Dominque de Rivaz. In September 2008, Basman received the Schweizer Fernsehpreis (Swiss TV-Prize) in the category film. In October 2008, he got the prize for the best main part from Cinema Tous Ecrans.
At the Schauspielhaus Zürich, Joel Basman acted in 2003 for a youth-theatre project. In 2004 and 2005, he played with students, who were at their final project. He finished his studies at the European Film Actor School in October 2008.
In 2012, Basman got a part as Bertel in the three-part TV film Unsere Mütter, unsere Väter (Our mothers, our fathers). [4] He also played Pascal in the Swiss TV-film Ziellos (Aimless).
Joel Basman starred as Sebastien Leclercq in a game called Late Shift in 2016.
In 2018, Basman played the lead role in The Awakening of Motti Wolkenbruch , which was picked up by Netflix.

Maximilian Schell was a Swiss actor. He won the Academy Award for Best Actor for the 1961 American film Judgment at Nuremberg, his second acting role in Hollywood. Born in Austria, his parents were involved in the arts and he grew up surrounded by performance and literature. While he was still a child, his family fled to Switzerland in 1938 when Austria was annexed by Nazi Germany, and they settled in Zürich. After World War II ended, Schell took up acting and directing full-time. He appeared in numerous German films, often anti-war, before moving to Hollywood.
Bruno Ganz was a Swiss actor whose career in German stage, television and film productions spanned nearly 60 years. Thomas Imbach is an independent filmmaker based in Zürich, Switzerland. With his production company Bachim Films, Imbach produced his own work until 2007. He then founded Okofilm Productions with director/producer Andrea Staka. With Well Done (1994) and Ghetto (1997) Imbach established his trademark audio-visual style, which is based on a combination of cinema- verité camerawork and fast-paced editing. His fiction features Happiness is a Warm Gun, as well as Lenz (2006), I Was a Swiss Banker (2007) and the fictive autobiography Day is Done (2011) all premiered at the Berlinale. His latest feature film Mary Queen of Scots celebrated its premiere in Locarno and at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2013. His latest documentary Nemesis celebrated its international premiere at International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam 2020, where it received the Prize for Best Cinematography. It was selected as the Swiss entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 92nd Academy Awards, but it was not nominated. It is based on Swiss author Thomas Meyer's debut novel, also called Wolkenbruch's Wondrous Journey into the Arms of a Shiksa.
