Joel M. Miller (born 1943) is an American retired [1] politician and dentist by profession from New York State. He represented District 102 in the New York State Assembly, [2] which comprised Hyde Park, Fishkill, the town of Poughkeepsie, Clinton, Wappinger and La Grange within Dutchess County, New York. He is a Republican.
Miller holds a B.S. from the City College of New York, as well as a D.D.S. from Columbia University's School of Dental and Oral Surgery. He served in the United States Air Force on active duty from 1967 to 1969, remaining in the Air Force Reserve as a captain until approximately 1977. He was also a major in the New York State Guard.[ citation needed ]
After returning to New York in 1969, Miller established a dental practice in Poughkeepsie, which he maintained for three decades. He served as a member of the executive committee of the Duchess County Dental Society for 26 years. He served as treasurer of the same organization for five years and was its president for two years. He was once the president of the Mid-Hudson Dental Management and Marketing Corporation and remains a member of its executive committee.[ citation needed ]

The name is derived from the native compound Uppuqui-ipis-ing, from Uppuqui meaning "lodge-covered", plus ipis meaning "little water", plus ing meaning "place", all of which translates to "the reed-covered lodge by the little water place". This later evolved into Apokeepsing, then into Poughkeepsing, and finally Poughkeepsie.

The Walkway over the Hudson is a steel cantilever bridge spanning the Hudson River between Poughkeepsie, New York, on the east bank and Highland, New York, on the west bank. Built as a double track railroad bridge, it was completed on January 1, 1889, and formed part of the Maybrook Railroad Line of the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad.

The Kiryas Joel–Poughkeepsie–Newburgh, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area, as defined by the United States Office of Management and Budget, is an area consisting of two counties in New York's Hudson Valley, with the municipalities of Kiryas Joel, Poughkeepsie, and Newburgh as its principal cities. As of the 2020 census, the MSA had a population of 679,221. The area was centered on the urban area of Poughkeepsie-Newburgh. Prior to July 2023, it was known as the Poughkeepsie–Newburgh–Middletown, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area; whereupon it was renamed to its current name, to reflect population changes among its largest municipalities.
