Joel Martin (born April 22, 1982) is an American former professional ice hockey goaltender who is currently the Head Coach of the Kalamazoo Wings of the ECHL. [1]
Martin played for the Western Hockey League from 2000–03, which is classified as a Major Junior Hockey League. In the 2000–01 season, Martin played 42 game for the Lethbridge Hurricanes and went 17–18–1. The following season, he played with the Hurricanes for 3 more games, before moving on to the Tri-City Americans for 37 games. In his 37 games as an American, Joel went 13–13–5. In the 2002–03 season, Martin moved to the Vancouver Giants where he played 26 games with a 10–12–2 record. Late in the '02–03 season, Martin switched teams to the Calgary Hitmen, ending his junior career at 5–6–1.
Martin played three games for the Bakersfield Condors of the West Coast Hockey League (WCHL) in the 2002–03 season, and left them with a record of 1–2–0.
Martin had a number of stints in the ECHL, the first of which was in the 2003–04 season with the Columbus Cottonmouths. Martin played 5 games with the Cottonmouths, and went 3–2–0.
Martin came back to the ECHL in the 2006–07 season when he played 32 games for the Trenton Titans, and went 12–15–2. He stayed in the league, but moved to the Elmira Jackals for the 2007–08 season, playing 49 games for the Jackals, with a record of 27–17–4. Martin started the 2008–09 season out in the ECHL with the Augusta Lynx, but left after 3 games with a record of 1–2–0.
Martin played two seasons in the United Hockey League (UHL), both of which were with the Kalamazoo Wings. In the 2004–05 season, he went 17–8–1 in his 26 games, and in the 2005–06 season, played 52 games, going 36–12–4. Martin led his team to the playoffs in the 2005–06 season, and helped them to win the Colonial Cup. In his time at with the Kwings in the 2005–06 season, Martin had the highest save percentage with .921, and the lowest goals against average with 2.20. Martin won Goaltender of the Year for the UHL in the 2005–06 season.
Martin played his first year in the International Hockey League (IHL) in the 2008–09 season for the Kalamazoo Wings, sharing ice time with Jason Tapp. His record was 19–12–1 in 36 games.
Martin played two seasons in the Central Hockey League (CHL), both with the Odessa Jackalopes. In the 2003–04 season, he had a 3–4–2 record in 10 games. In 2009–10, he led the Jackalopes with a record of 27–6–2 in 36 games.
Martin has never played a full season for the American Hockey League, but he has been frequently called up by various AHL teams since the 2005–06 season. He has been called up for a total of 4 games, and has gone 2–1–0. He has been called up to Milwaukee, Grand Rapids, Cleveland, Norfolk, and Syracuse, but only logged time with the last three. He started the 2010–11 season in the AHL with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.
On February 4, 2011, Martin was signed by the New York Islanders to a one-year, two-way (NHL/AHL) standard professional contract, and he was assigned to play with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. [2] He was called up as an emergency replacement on February 8, 2011 after Kevin Poulin got injured during the pregame skate. He was unable to make it for the start of the game and arrived at the arena well after puck drop.
Martin has led his team to the playoffs four times. First he led the Kalamazoo Wings to the playoffs in 2004–05. Joel had a record of 2–1 in the 2004–05 playoffs, but the Kwings were defeated. Joel led the Kwings to the playoffs again in the 2005–06 season and led the Wings to a 12–1 record, winning the Colonial Cup. Martin led the Trenton Titans to the playoffs in the 2006–07 season as well as the Elmira Jackals in the 2007–08 season, but saw success in neither. He led the Odessa Jackalopes to the CHL's Southern Conference Final; losing in seventh game to the Allen Americans.
Martin set the United Hockey League Record for most shutouts in a season with 9, as well as most goaltender wins in a single season with 36.

The Central Hockey League (CHL) was a North American mid-level minor professional ice hockey league which operated from 1992 until 2014. It was founded by Ray Miron and Bill Levins and later sold to Global Entertainment Corporation, which operated the league from 2000 to 2013, at which point it was purchased by the individual franchise owners. As of the end of its final season in 2014, three of the 30 National Hockey League teams had affiliations with the CHL: the Dallas Stars, Minnesota Wild, and Tampa Bay Lightning.
The United Hockey League (UHL), originally known as the Colonial Hockey League from 1991 to 1997 and last known as the International Hockey League from 2007 to 2010, was a low-level minor professional ice hockey league, with teams in the United States and Canada. The league was headquartered in Rochester, Michigan, and, in its last year, consisted of seven teams. It folded in 2010, with most of its teams joining the Central Hockey League. The Central Hockey League teams still operating in 2014 were then added to ECHL. The only former CoHL/UHL/IHL teams still active as of 2022 are the Fort Wayne Komets and Kalamazoo Wings.
The Fort Wayne Komets are a minor league ice hockey team in the ECHL. They play their home games at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, Indiana. This team was previously a member of the Central Hockey League (CHL), the original International Hockey League (IHL), and the second International Hockey League (UHL/IHL). Founded in the original IHL They have won four post-season championship titles in the original IHL in 1963, 1965, 1973, and 1993, four in the UHL/second IHL in 2003, 2008, 2009, and 2010, one in the CHL in 2012, and one in the ECHL in 2021. In all of North American professional hockey, only the Original Six teams of the NHL and the Hershey Bears of the AHL have played continuously in the same city with the same name longer than the Komets.
The Elmira Jackals were a professional minor league ice hockey team based in Elmira, New York. They were members of the United Hockey League from 2000 to 2007 and the ECHL from 2007 to 2017. The Jackals played their home games at First Arena.
The Kalamazoo Wings, nicknamed the K-Wings, are a mid-level professional ice hockey team in Kalamazoo, Michigan. A member of the ECHL's Western Conference, Central Division, they play in the 5,113-seat Wings Event Center. They are the affiliate of the Columbus Blue Jackets of the National Hockey League, and the Cleveland Monsters of the American Hockey League.
The Colorado Eagles are a professional minor league ice hockey team based in Loveland, Colorado. The Eagles play in the Pacific Division of the American Hockey League.
The Columbus Cottonmouths were a professional ice hockey team based in Columbus, Georgia. The team is nicknamed the Snakes and played their home games at the Columbus Civic Center. In 2017, the team suspended operations after failing to find a new owner.
The Cincinnati Cyclones are a professional ice hockey team based in Cincinnati, Ohio. The team is a member of the ECHL. Originally established in 1990, the team first played their games in the Cincinnati Gardens and now play at Heritage Bank Center. The Cyclones are a minor league affiliate of the Buffalo Sabres and the Rochester Americans.

The Dubuque Fighting Saints were a Tier I junior ice hockey team that played in the United States Hockey League (USHL) from 1980 to 2001. The team moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma to become the Tulsa Crude in 2001 citing low attendance and rising costs. A new team would use the same name when Dubuque was granted an expansion franchise in the USHL in 2010.
Paul Christopher Gillis is a Canadian former professional ice hockey forward. He played in the National Hockey League with the Quebec Nordiques, Chicago Blackhawks and Hartford Whalers between 1982 and 1993.
Mark Major is a Canadian former professional ice hockey left winger. He played two games in the National Hockey League with the Detroit Red Wings during the 1996–97 season. He was drafted 25th overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 1988 NHL Entry Draft. Major acquired many penalty minutes over his career due to his playing style, which involved battling in front of the net for loose pucks, scoring garbage goals, and blocking the goaltenders view. Major only played in two NHL games, for the Detroit Red Wings. He also enjoyed a short career as a professional roller hockey player in Roller Hockey International (RHI). Taking into account all of his hockey games played at a professional level, Major played in 1,339 games and acquired 4,334 penalty minutes, giving Major an average of 3.24 penalty minutes per game during his career. After 4 seasons and 2 Championships as head coach of the Amherstview Jets Junior A team, Major is taking a year off to help coach his daughter's Kingston Ice Wolves' Peewee AA team.
Stephen Paul Martinson is an American former professional ice hockey player and coach. He played 49 games in the National Hockey League with the Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, and Minnesota North Stars between 1987 and 1992. The rest of his playing career, which lasted from 1981 to 1996, was spent in various minor leagues. After retiring as a player he turned to coaching, and his 1,123 career professional coaching wins are the most ever for an American born ice hockey head coach.
The Toledo Walleye are a professional ice hockey team based in Toledo, Ohio. The Walleye are members of the Central Division of the Western Conference of the ECHL. The Walleye were founded in 1991 as the Toledo Storm and play their home games at the Huntington Center, which opened in 2009. Since the beginning of the 2009–10 season, the team has been affiliated with the Detroit Red Wings of the National Hockey League and the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League with an agreement in place through the 2023–24 season.

Riley Gill is an American former professional ice hockey goaltender. He last played for the Allen Americans of the ECHL, where he won Goaltender of the Year in 2016–17 and backstopped the team to two Kelly Cup playoff championships in 2015 and 2016.
The 2014–15 ECHL season was the 27th season of the ECHL. The regular season schedule ran from October 17, 2014, to April 11, 2015, with the Kelly Cup playoffs following. Twenty-eight teams in 20 states and one Canadian province each played a 72-game schedule. Ten days prior to the start of the season, the league was significantly expanded on October 7, 2014, after the ECHL had accepted the Central Hockey League's remaining seven teams as members for the 2014–15 season.
The 2015–16 ECHL season was the 28th season of the ECHL. The regular season schedule ran from October 16, 2015 to April 9, 2016 with the Kelly Cup playoffs to follow. Twenty-eight teams in 21 states and one Canadian province each played a 72-game schedule. The league alignment was significantly altered before the season when the American Hockey League announced the formation of a Pacific Division on January 30, 2015 displacing the ECHL teams that had been in California markets.
