Johannes "Johan" Bouma (born 29 October 1940) is a Dutch soil scientist. He worked at the Netherlands Soil Survey Institute from 1975 to 1983 and was professor of soil science at Wageningen University and Research Centre between 1983 and 2002.

Career

Bouma was born on 29 October 1940 in Vrouwenparochie. [1] He studied soil science at Wageningen University and Research Centre, obtaining his degree cum laude in 1966. He continued studying at the university and obtained his PhD in soil management in 1969. Bouma subsequently moved to the United States and became a postdoc at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he also held teaching positions until his return to the Netherlands in 1975. There, he became head of the soil physics department of Netherlands Soil Survey Institute  [ nl ]. From 1983 to 1986 he served as adjunct director of the institute. [2] [3]

In 1986 Bouma was appointed professor of soil science at Wageningen University and Research Centre. As professor he specialized in soil inventarisation and land evaluation. He retired in 2002. From 1998 to 2003 he was member of the Dutch Scientific Council for Government Policy. [2] [3] In 2020 together with former Dutch Minister for Agriculture Cees Veerman he was a part of think tank of the European Commission which published a vision called "Mission on Soil, Health and Food". Bouma was elected a Fellow of the Soil Science Society of America in 1983 or 1985. [2] [3] He was elected a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1989. [5] He was made an Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau in 2001. [3] In 2014 he won the Presidents Award of the Soil Science Society of America. [6] Bouma won the 2017 Alexander von Humboldt Medal of the European Geosciences Union. [7] [8] During the 2018 World Congress of the International Union of Soil Sciences he was awarded the Dokuchaev Award. [6] In 2019 a Festschrift was published in his honour. [9]

He received William Christian Krumbein Medal in 1978 from International Association for Mathematical Geosciences. In 1981 Agterberg became a correspondent of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 2004, he was named IAMG Distinguished Lecturer. He was the president of International Association for Mathematical Geosciences from 2004 to 2008. His contribution in Quantitative Stratigraphy in collaboration with Felix M. Gradstein is noteworthy.

Johannes Sipko Boersma is a Dutch archaeologist and emeritus professor at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. He was elected a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1986. He obtained his PhD at the University of Groningen in 1970.

Willem Johan van der Oord was a Dutch hydraulic engineer. He was involved in setting up the Mekong Committee and served as its Executive agent from December 1969 until June 1980. He also worked for the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific.

Herman Bouma is a Dutch vision researcher and gerontechnologist. He is considered to be one of the founders of the field of gerontechnology. He spent the majority of his career at the Institute of Perception Research, serving as its director from the mid-1970s until 1994. He subsequently led the Institute for Gerontechnology until 1999. A perceptual law, based on a publication of his in 1970 is named Bouma's Law in his honour.

Hans Herman Cohen was a Dutch microbiologist. He was director-general of the Netherlands National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) between 1984 and 1986. As a microbiologist Cohen worked on development of polio vaccines in the Netherlands.

Nico van Breemen is a Dutch soil scientist. He was a professor of pedogenesis at Wageningen University and Research Centre between 1986 and 2004.

He is credited with popularizing the use of the so-called Edelman soil auger to study soil profiles. Using studies of soil profiles he compiled a very high resolution soil-types map of the Netherlands.

Henk Wolda is a Dutch entomologist. He was an employee at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) in Panama, where he studied insects. During the 1980s he was one of the top publishers on biodiversity based in Panama. His papers from circa 1974 to 1990 are kept in the Smithsonian Institution Archives. His insect collection is held at the STRI, and derived from performing light trapping techniques, with large numbers coming from Barro Colorado Island.
