John Cauchi AM is an Australian lawyer who served as the Attorney General of Tonga from 2009 [1] to 2010. [2]
Cauchi graduated with a master's degree in criminology from the University of Sydney in 1995. [4]
He has had extensive work experience in the South Pacific,from being senior crown counsel with Tonga's Crown Law Department in the 1990s to being senior advisor to the public prosecutor's office in Vanuatu from 2001 to 2003, [5] and Director of Public Prosecutions in the Solomon Islands,from 2004 to 2006. Cauchi was appointed as Tonga's Attorney General on 25 May 2009. [1] In April 2010,he resigned,citing government interference in the country's legal system. [2] He was the first Attorney General of Tonga not to hold the post of Minister of Justice at the same time. [1] He succeeded 'Alisi Afeaki Taumoepeau. [3] Following his resignation he sued the Tongan government for breach of contract,seeking $480,000 in damages. [7]
In Australia he has served as a senior prosecutor in the Australian Capital Territory and as principal crown counsel in the office of the DPP in Tasmania (during 2009). [8]
Cauchi was appointed to the status of Senior Counsel in a special session of the Supreme Court in Nukuʻalofa,held on 30 June 2009. [9]
He was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in the Queen's Birthday Honours in June 2015 for significant service to the law,and to international relations,through leading public administration and legal roles in the South Pacific. [4]

Tonga,officially the Kingdom of Tonga,is an island country in Polynesia,part of Oceania. The country has 171 islands –of which 45 are inhabited. Its total surface area is about 750 km2 (290 sq mi),scattered over 700,000 km2 (270,000 sq mi) in the southern Pacific Ocean. As of 2021,according to Johnson's Tribune,Tonga has a population of 104,494,70% of whom reside on the main island,Tongatapu. The country stretches approximately 800 km (500 mi) north-south. In some jurisdictions,attorneys general also have executive responsibility for law enforcement,prosecutions or even responsibility for legal affairs generally. In practice,the extent to which the attorney general personally provides legal advice to the government varies between jurisdictions,and even between individual office-holders within the same jurisdiction,often depending on the level and nature of the office-holder's prior legal experience.
A King's Counsel is a senior lawyer appointed by the monarch of some Commonwealth realms as a "Counsel learned in the law". When the reigning monarch is a woman,the title is Queen's Counsel (QC).
The title of Senior Counsel or State Counsel is given to a senior lawyer in some countries that were formerly part of the British Empire. "Senior Counsel" is used in current or former Commonwealth countries or jurisdictions that have chosen to change the title "King's Counsel" to a name without monarchical connotations,usually related to the British monarch that is no longer head of state,such that reference to the King is no longer appropriate.
