John Leslie Coven (born August 27, 1958) is an American storyboard artist, film director, educator [1] and the author of several comics and children's picture books. [2] [3] He is currently the director of the department of animated film at the Gobelins School of the Image in Paris, France. [4] [5]
Coven graduated in 1980 from The College of William and Mary in Virginia with a Bachelor of Science and from the École Nationale des Arts Décoratifs in Strasbourg, France with a diploma in illustration. [6] He began writing and illustrating children’s books while completing his studies. [7] His first book was published in France by Galllimard. [8] [3]
His career as a storyboard artist started in Hollywood in the 1990s and spans more than three decades and includes over 80 feature films [9] such as the blockbusters The Lion King, Jurassic World, Venom, Logan, Captain America: Civil War, and the X-Men. [10]
In 1995, Coven became a member of the Art Directors Guild, [11] and began teaching storyboarding, illustration and filmmaking in various Art Schools around the world such as the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, the Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles, l' École Emile Cohl and the Atelier de Sèvres in France as well as animation schools such as the Gobelins School of the Image in Paris, France and The Animation Workshop in Denmark. In 2022, Coven became a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences; [13] [14] in the same year, he was appointed director of the department of animated film at Gobelins School of the Image in Paris, France. [9]

Gobelins, l'école de l'image also known as Gobelins Paris is a school of visual communication and arts in Paris, France, with its main location near the Latin Quarter. A consular school funded by the Paris Chamber of Commerce and Industry, it provides several programs at a range of fees.

Michel Ocelot is a French writer, designer, storyboard artist and director of animated films and television programs and a former president of the International Animated Film Association. Le Building is a 2005 French animated short film directed by a team of final year students at Gobelins, l'École de l'image. The story depicts a series of slapstick accidents that cause destruction to a three-story apartment complex. Le Building's team of five directors is composed of Pierre Perifel and Olivier Staphylas, both of whom went on to become Annie Award-recognized animators at DreamWorks, Xavier Ramonède and Annie award-nominated Marco Nguyen, who have continued their careers with animation credits on various high-profile French productions, and Rémi Zaarour, who has since become a comic book artist, published under the pseudonym Pozla.
Marco Nguyen is a French animator, known for his work on French feature films, as well as for his short film Lisa, which served as the pilot for an unproduced television series, and for his award-winning student film Le Building. He directed the music video for Tryo's song "Greenwashing", served as an animation director on the 2011 French film The Rabbi's Cat, and served as an assistant director on the 2019 French film The Swallows of Kabul. In 2017, he received an Annie Award nomination in the Character Animation category for The Big Bad Fox & Other Tales. Nguyen also developed cutscenes for the 2018 video game Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom.

She is mostly known for writing and directing the multi-award-winning short film 27, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2023, where it won the Palme d'Or du court métrage. Buda has also written and directed the award-winning short film Entropia (2019), which was her university graduation project at MOME.

A Bear Named Wojtek is a 2023 Scottish-Polish animated short film directed by Iain Gardner. The 28-minute animated film about the true story of Wojtek, the war bear, has been selected in various international film festivals, including the Annecy International Animation Film Festival and the Manchester Animation Film Festival. It also won a British Animation Award for Best Long Form Animation as well as a Venice TV Award for Best Animation. The film was first broadcast on BBC Alba on the 8th May 2024.
