John David Rutherford is a British literary critic who is Emeritus Fellow (2008) of The Queen's College, Oxford, a Hispanist and an award-winning novelist [1] and translator [2] from Spanish to English.
Rutherford attended The Haberdashers' Aske's Boys' School in North London. He started his Spanish studies at Wadham College before going on to St Antony's College in 1969, although he had already started lecturing at Queen's College the previous year. [3]
He has been Praelector in Spanish, Laming Resident Fellow, and Secretary of the Laming Committee. [4]
Rutherford lectured on medieval, Golden Age and modern Spanish literature, and modern Spanish-American literature. His interests include Galician studies, and the theory and practice of literary translation. He was decorated by King Juan Carlos of Spain for his 2005 translation of Leopoldo Alas (‘Clarín’)'s La Regenta, the first translation into English of the book. [5]
A past president of the International Association of Galician Studies (AEIG) from 1994 to 1997, [6] Rutherford is the Director of the Centre for Galician Studies at the University of Oxford and belongs to the Association of Hispanists of Great Britain and Ireland. He is an honorary member of the Real Academia Gallega (Royal Galician Academy). [3] [5]
He was appointed as doctor honoris causa by the Universidade da Coruña (University of A Coruña) in October 2011. The ceremony took place on 23 March 2012 in the city of A Coruña.

Leopoldo Enrique García-Alas y Ureña, also known as Clarín, was a Spanish realist novelist born in Zamora. His inflammatory articles, known as paliques (“chitchat”), as well as his advocacy of liberalism and anti-clericalism, made him a formidable and controversial critical voice. He died in Oviedo.

Francisco García Tortosa is a Spanish University Professor, literary critic, and translator into Spanish. In Spain García Tortosa is considered one of the chief experts on the figure and work of the Irish writer, James Joyce, whose creations he has translated and about which he has published a wide range of studies. The Irish hispanist, Ian Gibson, has called García Tortosa «Spain's leading expert on Joyce», while considering his translation of Ulysses, in collaboration with María Luisa Venegas, as «prodigious».
The 1981 Galician regional election was held on Tuesday, 20 October 1981, to elect the 1st Parliament of the autonomous community of Galicia. All 71 seats in the Parliament were up for election. The election was held simultaneously with a Statute of Autonomy referendum in Andalusia.
Queremos Galego or Plataforma Queremos Galego! is a citizen platform and social movement, consisting of 600 entities from different areas and by people individually, that was born in 2009 to articulate a collective response in defense of the Galician language, its public use and the linguistic rights of the Galician-speaking population. The main actions of the platform are demonstrations and public acts. The current main goal of Queremos Galego is to fight against the linguistic policy of the People's Party of Galicia.
En Marea is a political party and former political alliance integrated by Podemos, Anova, United Left of Galicia and some municipal alliances that participated in the 2015 Spanish local elections. It was formed in November 2015 as an electoral coalition to contest the 2015 Spanish general election in Galicia. As part of the coalition agreement with Podemos, the name on the ballot paper for both the 2015 and 2016 general elections was Podemos–En Marea–Anova–EU.
Manuel María Fernández Teixeiro, better known as Manuel María, was a Spanish poet and academic who wrote in the Galician language. He was notable for his combative character and his political commitment. His poetry touched on themes of love, art, his own political commitment, drawing attention to wrongs, ethnography, physics, history, immateriality, mythology, the animal world, poetic expression, the passing of time, religion, society, language, agricultural labour, urbanism, and geography. The Day of Galician Literature was devoted to him in 2016.
A referendum on the approval of the Galician Statute of Autonomy was held in Galicia on Sunday, 21 December 1980. Voters were asked whether they ratified a proposed Statute of Autonomy of Galicia bill organizing the provinces of La Coruña, Lugo, Orense and Pontevedra into an autonomous community of Spain. The final draft of the bill had been approved following an inter-party agreement on 26 September 1980, but it required ratification through a binding referendum and its subsequent approval by the Spanish Cortes Generales, as established under Article 151 of the Spanish Constitution of 1978.
We–Galician Candidacy was an electoral alliance of Galician nationalist parties formed ahead of the 2015 Spanish general election by the Galician Nationalist Bloc (BNG), Galician Coalition (CG), Galicianist Party (PG), Communist Party of the Galician People (PCPG) and Galician Workers' Front (FOGA). The alliance failed in securing parliamentary representation in the general election, leaving the BNG out of the Congress of Deputies for the first time in 20 years.
Fernando Peña López is a Spanish lawyer specialized in civil law, and the current director of Fundación INADE-UDC Chair of risk management and insurance at Universidade da Coruña. He is an expert in civil liability, insurance law, and consumer law, and is author of publications in this field. He has worked as of Counsel for law firms and acted as am arbitrator of the Galician Arbitration Court. He earned a PhD from Universidade da Coruña in 2000 with a thesis on culpability in extracontractual civil liability, and furthered his studies at the universities of Roma-La Sapienza, Montpellier, Coimbra and Fordham.
Galicia en Común is a left-wing alliance in Galicia formed by Podemos and United Left (EU) as a successor to the En Marea alliance, which after turning into a party broke up from their three constituent parties in early 2019 as a result of political and leadership differences. The alliance has contested the April 2019 and November 2019 Spanish general elections under the En Común–Unidas Podemos label, and it also exists as a sub-group within the Unidas Podemos confederal parliamentary group in the Congress of Deputies. In September 2019, Podemos and EU, together with Renewal–Nationalist Brotherhood, comprised the Grupo Común da Esquerda parliamentary group, and the alliance is scheduled to be renewed ahead of the 2020 Galician regional election.
Néstor Rego Candamil is a Galician teacher, politician and a member of the Congress of Deputies of Spain. He is leader of the Galician People's Union.
Evaristo Martelo y Paumán del Nero Nuñez y Zuazo-Mondragón, 6th Marquess of Almeiras (1850–1928), was a Spanish aristocrat, writer and politician. He is known chiefly as a poet who contributed to emergence of the literary Galician and who is counted among protagonists of the so-called Rexurdimento. He perceived galego as a royal language of ancient rulers, framed in the Celtic mythology, and opposed the concept of Galician as a rural folk speak. Martelo engaged in few organisations related to the Galician culture and was a member of the Royal Galician Academy. Politically he supported the Traditionalist cause and served as leader of the Carlist provincial organisation in La Coruña; he has never engaged in buildup of the Galician nationalism.
The Provincial Savings Bank of Pontevedra was a Spanish financial institution based in the city of Pontevedra (Spain) dependent on the Provincial Council of Pontevedra, existing between 1930 and 2000.
