John Friedman Alice Kimm Architects (JFAK) is an American architecture firm founded in 1996 in Los Angeles, California USA. [1]

History

JFAK's architectural practice was founded by husband-and-wife team, John Friedman and Alice Kimm.

Friedman has a B.S. in Architecture from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a Master of Architecture from Harvard University. [2] He also earned a Master of Arts degree in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics from Oxford University, where he was California’s Newton Tatum Scholar. [3]  

Kimm was born and raised in Chicago and spent her high school years in Seoul. [4] Kimm has a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Cornell University and a Master of Architecture from Harvard University. [5]

JFAK's work has been widely recognized. They received a Responsible Disruptors Award from Metropolis Magazine in 2022 for their Open Source Homelessness Initiative (OSHI). In 2004, Friedman and Kimm were named Architectural League Emerging Voices by the Architectural League of New York. [6] Their work has been noted in The Los Angeles Times, [7] [8] The Architect's Newspaper, [9] LAist, [10] Curbed LA, [11] and Arch Daily. [12]

Notable projects

In 2021, JFAK opened the Navig8 Council District 8 Homeless Navigation Center, which has proven indispensable to the local community. That same year, they contributed a public art project, Listen In, to the United Way of Greater LA. In 2016, JFAK completed a 144,000 square-foot collegiate recreation facility, the Roberts Pavilion, at Claremont McKenna College, [13] [14] as well as the La Kretz Innovation Campus (LKIC), [15] a 3.2-acre campus located in a former furniture and fabric warehouse in the Los Angeles’ Arts District for entrepreneurs, engineers, and policymakers to innovate and support LA’s green economy. [16] The building of the LA Cleantech Incubator (LACI) is an adaptive reuse of a 61,000 square-foot warehouse that includes Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) facilities, offices, conference rooms, labs, prototyping workshops, and an event space. The project has been published in Metropolis Magazine, [17] Wallpaper, [18] and Dezeen. [19]

The work of her London-based practice, FMA, is celebrated for projects that integrate an inventive approach to space and materials and a strong social awareness, whether they be a cultural centre such as the Museum of Contemporary Art in Cleveland or a community centre such as the Ismaili Center Houston, a social housing project in Montpellier, or an elementary school in Saclay, both in France. Prior to foudning FMA, she was co-founder of the London-based Foreign Office Architects or FOA (1993-2011), recognised as one of the world's most creative design firms, integrating architecture, urban design, and landscape architecture in a wide range of projects internationally. Moussavi was elected a Royal Academician in 2015, and subsequently, Professor of Architecture at the RA Schools in 2017. Architecture criticism is the critique of architecture. Foreign Office Architects, FOA, was an architectural design studio headed by former husband and wife team Farshid Moussavi and Alejandro Zaera-Polo. The London-based studio, which was established in 1993, specialised in architectural design, master planning and interior design services for both public and private sector clients. Following the end of the couple's marriage, the winding up of the studio's activities was announced in December 2009. The establishment of two new practices, FMA and London/Barcelona based AZPA Limited followed in 2011.

Archimania is a collective of architects and designers in the South Main Historic Arts District of downtown Memphis, Tennessee. The collective was founded in 1995 and is led by Todd Walker, FAIA, and Barry Alan Yoakum, FAIA.

The Rudy Bruner Award for Urban Excellence (RBA) was established in 1986 by Cambridge, Massachusetts architect Simeon Bruner. The award is named after Simeon Bruner's late father, Rudy Bruner, founder of the Bruner Foundation. According to the Bruner Foundation, the RBA was created to increase understanding of the role of architecture in the urban environment and promote discussion of what constitutes urban excellence. The award seeks to identify and honor places, rather than people, that address economic and social concerns along with urban design.

Sekou Cooke is an American-Jamaican architect, author and educator, and is associated with the style of Hip-hop architecture. He is the Director of the Master in Urban Design program at UNC Charlotte and principal of Sekou Cooke Studio. Cooke is one of the founding members of the Black Reconstruction Collective.

Leong Leong is an architecture studio and design consultancy in New York City. Founded in 2009 by brothers Dominic Leong and Chris Leong, the studio is known for material experimentation and integrating aesthetics with social practice.

Aaron Neubert, FAIA is an American architect based in Los Angeles, California and the founder and principal of Aaron Neubert Architects. In 2021, Neubert was elevated to the college of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects for "notable contributions to the advancement of the profession of architecture."
