John Gabriel is an American basketball executive who serves as the executive advisor for the Orlando Magic of the National Basketball Association. He is known for his time as general manager with the Magic, who reached the NBA Playoffs five times during his tenure.
Gabriel started his coaching career with the Philadelphia 76ers working as an assistant coach, the director of video scouting, and the scouting coordinator.
Gabriel was hired by the Magic in 1987 as the director of player personnel, director of scouting and assistant coach. Gabriel helped the Magic reach the NBA Playoffs two times as vice president of basketball operations, and as a player personnel coach from 1994–1996. He reached the NBA Finals in 1995, won the Eastern Conference Finals in 1995 and won the Atlantic Division in 1995, 1996 and 1999.
With Darrell Armstrong leading the team, the Magic compiled a 41–41 record but missed the playoffs in the 1999 season. Gabriel hired Doc Rivers as head coach of the Magic at the beginning of that season. Rivers won Coach of the Year honors. In 2000, Gabriel won the NBA and Sport Illustrated Executive of the Year Award. The following season, Gabriel pursued free agents Grant Hill, Tim Duncan and Tracy McGrady. Ultimately, Hill and McGrady came to Orlando, while Duncan decided to stay with the San Antonio Spurs. In addition, Gabriel drafted Mike Miller, who would later become Rookie of the Year.
Gabriel was let go by the Magic in the middle of a franchise record 19-game losing streak during the 2003–04 NBA season.
Elected to the Magic Hall of Fame in 2022.
Gabriel returned to basketball in the NBA as an executive and scout first for the Portland Trail Blazers.
In 2008, he became the director of scouting for the New York Knicks. [1]
Gabriel's great grandparent Francesco Gabriele immigrated to the United States from Guardiagrele – Italy in the late 19th century.
Gabriel revealed in 2012 that he had been suffering from Parkinson's disease. [2] [3]
Gabriel is a 1978 graduate of Kutztown State Teachers College (now Kutztown University of Pennsylvania), where he played basketball. He was inducted into the school's Athletics Hall of Fame in 2006. [4]
The Orlando Magic are an American professional basketball team based in Orlando, Florida. The franchise was established in 1989 as an expansion franchise, and such notable NBA stars as Shaquille O'Neal, Penny Hardaway, Grant Hill, Tracy McGrady, and Dwight Howard have played for the club throughout its history. He has been the team president of the Miami Heat since 1995, and he also served as the team's head coach from 1995 to 2003 and again from 2005 to 2008. Stanley Alan Van Gundy is an American former basketball coach who is a television commentator for NBA on TNT and College Basketball on CBS. Prior to TNT, he was most recently the head coach for the New Orleans Pelicans of the NBA. He also served as the head coach and president of basketball operations for the Detroit Pistons from 2014 to 2018. From 2003 to 2005, he was the head coach of the Miami Heat but resigned in 2005 mid-season, returning the job over to Pat Riley. Van Gundy then coached the Orlando Magic for five seasons from 2007 to 2012, leading them to the 2009 NBA Finals. He is the older brother of former New York Knicks and Houston Rockets head coach Jeff Van Gundy.

Prior to LIU, he served as the program manager for the NBA G League's professional path. Strickland played college basketball for the DePaul Blue Demons, earning All-American honors. He had a long career in the National Basketball Association (NBA), playing from 1988 to 2005. Strickland was an assistant coach for the South Florida Bulls, under Orlando Antigua from 2014 to 2017. He formerly served in an administrative role for the University of Kentucky basketball team under head coach John Calipari and was the director of basketball operations at the University of Memphis under Calipari. He is the godfather of current NBA player Kyrie Irving. Strickland was inducted into the New York City Basketball Hall of Fame with the Class of 2008.

Demps played in the NBA for the Golden State Warriors, San Antonio Spurs and Orlando Magic after a college basketball career with the Pacific Tigers.

Scott Perry is an American basketball executive and former coach. He served as the general manager for the New York Knicks of the National Basketball Association (NBA) from 2017 to 2023. His contract expired at the end of the 2023 season, and the Knicks decided not to bring him back.
The 2004–05 NBA season was the Rockets' 38th season in the National Basketball Association, and their 34th season in the city of Houston. During the offseason, the Rockets acquired All-Star forward Tracy McGrady and Juwan Howard from the Orlando Magic, acquired All-Star center Dikembe Mutombo from the Chicago Bulls, who acquired him from the New York Knicks, and signed free agent Bob Sura. The Rockets struggled with a 6–11 start to the season, then played around .500 as they traded Jim Jackson to the New Orleans Hornets for David Wesley in late December. The Rockets would later on win eight straight games in February, as McGrady and Yao Ming were both selected to play in the 2005 NBA All-Star Game at Denver. At midseason, the team traded Maurice Taylor to the New York Knicks, and acquired Mike James from the Milwaukee Bucks.
