Monte McNair is an American sports executive who is the general manager and president of basketball operations for the Sacramento Kings. [1] [2] [3] He was appointed to this position in September 2020, having previously spent 13 years in the Houston Rockets organization.

Early life and education

McNair grew up in Oak Park, California, and attended Oak Park High School. [4]

McNair earned a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science from Princeton University in 2006. While attending college, McNair was a wide receiver on the football team. [5] From 2006 to 2007, he was a sports programmer and researcher at STATS LLC. [6]

Career

Houston Rockets

In 2007, McNair joined the Houston Rockets as the basketball operations senior analyst. McNair was then promoted to director of basketball operations in 2013, VP of basketball operations in 2016, and assistant GM in 2018. While working for the Rockets team, his organization reached the NBA playoffs for eight consecutive years, including two Western Conference Finals appearances. [7] Highly regarded executive Daryl Morey (who was the president of basketball operations of the Rockets at this time) said in 2018, "Monte has been absolutely critical to the success of the Rockets over his long tenure."

Sacramento Kings

After former Kings GM Vlade Divac, Kings assistant GM Peja Stojakovic, and Stockton Kings GM Anthony McClishand stepped down in late 2020, the Kings organization made Joe Dumars their interim executive vice president of basketball operations. [8] [9] Divac and the Kings traded DeMarcus Cousins to New Orleans in 2017 and chose to draft Marvin Bagley III in 2018, one pick ahead of Luka Doncic. The Kings had missed the postseason for the past 14 consecutive seasons going back to 2006 - the longest active drought and one shy of the NBA record held by the Buffalo/San Diego/Los Angeles Clippers. During this extended playoff drought, the Kings had 10 different head coaches.

On September 17, 2020, the Sacramento Kings announced the hire of McNair as the general manager and president of basketball operations. Owner Vivek Ranadivé said, "I am excited to bring his extensive experience and vision onboard to lead our basketball operations department." [10]

The Kings also interviewed Sachin Gupta (Timberwolves' EVP of basketball operations), Wes Wilcox (Hawks' former GM), and Calvin Booth (GM of the Nuggets) for the position. [11]

In October 2020, McNair hired three employees to his front office: former Hawks GM Wes Wilcox as assistant GM, former 76ers director of scouting Phil Jabour as VP of player personnel, and OKC Blue assistant GM Paul Johnson as director of basketball operations. [12] [13] The group will join Ken Catanella, who remains with the team as an assistant GM. [14]

One of the largest problems that McNair faced was filling the shooting guard position as Bogdan Bogdanovic was a free agent in the 2020 offseason. The Kings selected Tyrese Haliburton with the 12th pick in the 2020 NBA draft. [15] In the 2021 NBA draft, McNair and the Kings showed they wanted to improve their defense after having a historically bad defensive year. They showed this by drafting Davion Mitchell with the 9th overall pick. [16]

On January 24, 2023, McNair signed a multi–year contract extension with the Kings. [17] On May 3, McNair was named the NBA Executive of the Year, after leading the Kings to a 48–34 record and their first playoff berth since the 2005–06 season. He also hired Mike Brown, the 2022–23 NBA Coach of the Year, the first person to win the award unanimously. [18]

The 1998–99 NBA season was the Kings' Golden Jubileu in the National Basketball Association, and 14th season in Sacramento. On March 23, 1998, the owners of all 29 NBA teams voted 27–2 to reopen the league's collective bargaining agreement, seeking changes to the league's salary cap system, and a ceiling on individual player salaries. The National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) opposed to the owners' plan, and wanted raises for players who earned the league's minimum salary. After both sides failed to reach an agreement, the owners called for a lockout, which began on July 1, 1998, putting a hold on all team trades, free agent signings and training camp workouts, and cancelling many NBA regular season and preseason games. Due to the lockout, the NBA All-Star Game, which was scheduled to be played in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on February 14, 1999, was also cancelled. However, on January 6, 1999, NBA commissioner David Stern, and NBPA director Billy Hunter finally reached an agreement to end the lockout. The deal was approved by both the players and owners, and was signed on January 20, ending the lockout after 204 days. The regular season began on February 5, and was cut short to just 50 games instead of the regular 82-game schedule.

The 2000–01 NBA season was the Kings' 52nd season in the National Basketball Association, and 16th season in Sacramento. During the off-season, the Kings acquired shooting guard Doug Christie from the Toronto Raptors, and signed free agent Bobby Jackson. After two straight playoff seasons, the Kings enjoyed another successful season by winning 14 of their first 18 games, on their way to a 27–10 start as of January 20, and held a 31–15 record at the All-Star break. The Kings would make it into the NBA's elite status by challenging the Pacific Division all season, falling just one game short with a solid 55–27 record. The team also posted three five-game winning streaks, which was their longest winning streak during the season.

The 2002–03 NBA season was the Kings' 54th season in the National Basketball Association, and 18th season in Sacramento. The Kings were coming off their controversial Western Conference Finals defeat to the Los Angeles Lakers, who won the series in seven games. During the off-season, the Kings signed free agent Keon Clark, and later on in December signed Jim Jackson. Throughout the season, none of the Kings' players played a full season via suspension or injury, but they still managed to hold a successful 34–17 record at the All-Star break, and post a 59–23 record, two games less than their previous output in which they went 61–21, thus repeating as Pacific Division Champions once again.

The 2003–04 NBA season was the Kings' 55th season in the National Basketball Association, and their 19th season in Sacramento. The season was best remembered for the team making a move in the offseason, acquiring Brad Miller from the Indiana Pacers and signing free agent Anthony Peeler. Superstar forward Chris Webber, who spent most of the season recovering from microfracture knee surgery, then serving a suspension due to the Ed Martin scandal, returned for the final 23 games of the season in which they played mediocre basketball the rest of the way.

Samuel Hinkie is an American businessman and former basketball executive who served as the general manager for the Philadelphia 76ers of the National Basketball Association (NBA) from 2013 to 2016.

Pete D’Alessandro is an American businessman, currently the Executive Vice President of basketball operations for the Orlando Magic of the National Basketball Association. Prior to joining the Magic, D’Alessandro was the general manager for the Sacramento Kings and an assistant general manager with the Golden State Warriors and Denver Nuggets twice.

The last time the team had qualified for the playoffs was in 2006. In the 2021 NBA draft, the Kings selected Davion Mitchell from Baylor University with the ninth pick.
