John R. Granara is an American attorney who served as a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives and as Special Sheriff of Middlesex County, Massachusetts.
Granara was born on January 23, 1943 in Medford, Massachusetts. He graduated from Matignon High School, Boston College, and Suffolk University Law School. [1]
From 1974 to 1977, Granara was a member of the Medford school committee. [1] In 1976 he was elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives in the 20th Middlesex district. Due to redistricting, he was forced to face fellow incumbent Angelo Marotta in 1978. He lost to Marotta 49% to 41%. When Marotta retired in 1988, Granara ran for the seat again, but lost in the Democratic primary to Anthony P. Giglio. [2]
In 1996, Granara was a coordinator for James DiPaola's campaign for Middlesex County Sheriff. After DiPaola took office, Granara became the chief legal counsel to the Middlesex County Sheriff’s Office. [3] Following DiPaola's suicide on November 26, 2010, Granara served as Special Sheriff of Middlesex County until the appointment of Peter Koutoujian by Governor Deval Patrick. [4] [5]

As of 2019, the estimated population was 1,611,699, making it the 22nd most populous county in the United States, and the most populous county in both Massachusetts and New England. Middlesex County is one of two U.S. counties to be amongst the top 25 counties with the highest household income and the 25 most populated counties. As part of the 2010 national census, the Commonwealth's mean center of population for that year was geo-centered in Middlesex County, in the town of Natick at. Middlesex County is included in the Census Bureau's Boston–Cambridge–Newton, MA–NH Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Marie P. St. Fleur is a Haitian American politician and lawyer. former Massachusetts State Representative who represented the Fifth Suffolk district from 1999-2011. Her district consisted of parts of the Boston neighborhoods Dorchester and Roxbury. She is the first Haitian-American to hold public office in Massachusetts. Representative St. Fleur was one of the most active supporters of John Kerry's presidential bid, often traveling to Florida to do outreach on his behalf. Representative St. Fleur was appointed Vice-Chair of the powerful Ways and Means Committee by House Speaker Salvatore DiMasi, a leadership position that has tremendous influence in the budget process. On January 30, 2006 Thomas F. Reilly, candidate for the Democratic nomination for governor, selected St. Fleur as his running mate. Candidates for governor and lieutenant governor run separately through the primary, then are joined as a single ticket for the election. The following day she withdrew after The Boston Globe reported that she was delinquent in tax debts and owed over $40,000 in student loans.

At the time of his death, he was facing multiple allegations from the state and press over ethics issues.

Primary elections were held on October 15, in which Democratic state senator Katherine Clark and Republican Frank Addivinola won their party nominations. State law required that Governor Deval Patrick call a special election between 145 and 160 days after the vacancy became official. On December 10, Clark easily defeated Addivinola with almost 2/3 of the vote, holding the seat for the Democrats. Clark's win marked the 92nd consecutive U.S. House loss by Republicans in Massachusetts since 1996.
