John Anthony David Hobbs (born 30 November 1935) is an English former first-class cricketer.
Hobbs was born in the Liverpool suburb of Aigburth in November 1935. He later studied at St Peter's College at the University of Oxford. [1] While studying at Oxford,he played first-class cricket for Oxford University,making his debut against Gloucestershire at Oxford in 1956. He played first-class cricket for Oxford until 1958,making a total of eighteen appearances. [2] Hobbs scored a total of 614 runs in his eighteen matches,at an average of 17.54. He passed fifty on three occasions,with a high score of 95 against Middlesex in 1975. [3] [4]
Sir John Berry Hobbs,always known as Jack Hobbs,was an English professional cricketer who played for Surrey from 1905 to 1934 and for England in 61 Test matches between 1908 and 1930. Known as "The Master",he is regarded by critics as one of the greatest batsmen in the history of cricket. He is the leading run-scorer and century-maker in first-class cricket,with 61,760 runs and 199 centuries. A right-handed batsman and an occasional right-arm medium pace bowler,Hobbs also excelled as a fielder,particularly in the position of cover point.
Middlesex County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Middlesex which has effectively been subsumed within the ceremonial county of Greater London. The club was founded in 1864 but teams representing the county have played top-class cricket since the early 18th century and the club has always held first-class status. A leg-spin and googly bowler and attacking batsman,he captained England in one Test match,in South Africa in 1927. He was widely regarded as one of the leading amateur cricketers of his generation who,because of his commitments outside cricket,was unable to fulfil his potential and left the game early.
Elias Henry Hendren,known as Patsy Hendren,was an English first-class cricketer,active 1907 to 1937,who played for Middlesex and England. He also had a concurrent career as a footballer and had a long tenure with Brentford F.C.. He was born in Turnham Green and died in Tooting Bec. A right-handed batsman who occasionally bowled off breaks,Hendren was one of the most prolific batsmen of the inter-war period,averaging 47.63 in his 51 Test matches and 50.80 in all his first-class matches. He has the third highest first-class run aggregate of 57,611 runs,and his total of 170 centuries ranks second only to Hobbs,who was a personal friend. Hendren was a noted wit,a keen practical joker and had a talent for mimicry.
Norman Stewart "Mandy" Mitchell-Innes was an amateur cricketer for Somerset,who played in one Test match for England in 1935. Between 1931 and 1949 Mitchell-Innes played 132 first-class matches,appearing 69 times for Somerset,and 43 times for Oxford University. In these matches he scored 6,944 runs,including 13 centuries and a top score of 207. He was well-regarded for the grace of his batting,but his cricket career was limited by both hay fever and his overseas work commitments.

Bernard James Tindal Bosanquet was an English cricketer best known for inventing the googly,a delivery designed to deceive the batsman. When bowled,it appears to be a leg break,but after pitching the ball turns in the opposite direction to that which is expected,behaving as an off break instead. Bosanquet,who played first-class cricket for Middlesex between 1898 and 1919,appeared in seven Test matches for England as an all-rounder. He was chosen as a Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1905.
Geoffrey Phillip Ellis is a former Welsh cricketer. Ellis was a right-handed batsman who bowled right-arm medium pace. He was born at Llandudno,Caernarfonshire.
John Harvey Gordon was an English cricketer. Gordon was a right-handed batsman whose bowling style is unknown. He played most of his first-class cricket for Oxford University,but also played county cricket for Surrey and Dorset.
Sir John Heathcoat-Amory,3rd Baronet was an English cricketer. Heathcoat-Amory was a right-handed batsman who bowled right-arm fast-medium.
Christopher John "Chris" Aworth is a retired cricketer for Surrey and Cambridge University. A left-handed batsman and occasional left-arm spin bowler born in Wimbledon,Aworth played for Surrey's Second XI from 1971 before appearing for Cambridge against the MCC in 1972 and making his first-class debut for them against Warwickshire in 1973. In July 1974 he was selected for Surrey's First XI and debuted against Lancashire. He would play twenty-eight County Championship matches for Surrey,as well as eighteen one day games in the John Player League and Benson and Hedges Cup. He scored 67 in the semi-final of the 1976 Benson &Hedges Cup. For Cambridge he made thirty-one appearances in total. Across his first-class career,he scored 2,552 runs including three centuries. His professional career ended in 1976 with matches against the British Army.
