Major General John Taylor Holmes, DSO , OBE , MC (born 22 July 1949) is a retired British Army officer who served as Director Special Forces from 1999 to 2001, which included command of Operation Barras in September 2000.

Military career

Holmes was commissioned into the Scots Guards in 1970. [1] In 1972 he was awarded the Military Cross for service in Northern Ireland. [2] He transferred to 22 Special Air Service in 1974 and was commanding officer of the regiment from 1989 to 1992. [3] He then commanded the Airborne Brigade for three years. [3] He worked for the Supreme Allied Commander Europe before being appointed Director Special Forces in 1999. [3] He was promoted to major general in 2001 and became General Officer Commanding 4th Division, before retiring in 2002. [3]

Post-military career

In 2002, Holmes joined Inkerman, a security and risk management company. [1] He is a Director of Erinys International, and the founder of Titon International. [1] Holmes joined the British Syrian Society in January 2018. [4] The BSS was set up, and is run, by Fawaz Akhras, the British-based father-in-law of President Bashar al-Assad. "It doesn’t mean I support the actions of President Assad and the Syrian government", Holmes told The Sunday Times . "I believe in dialogue ... Perhaps it [the BSS] is not the ideal vehicle for that, but at the moment it’s the only vehicle". [4]

Issam Jad'aan Zahreddine was a Syrian military officer and former commander of the Syrian Republican Guard. He played a major role in the Syrian Civil War, leading Syrian government forces on several fronts. His most prominent role was the leadership of the surrounded Syrian forces during the over three-year long Siege of Deir ez-Zor. On 18 October 2017, Zahreddine was killed by a land mine explosion during operations against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant on Saqr island in Deir ez-Zor.

Ali Haydar, known as the "Father of the Syrian Special Forces", was a Syrian military officer who was the commander of the Syrian Special Forces for 26 years. He was a close confidant to President Hafez al-Assad and one of the members of Assad's inner circle. Born in the village of Hallet Ara, Haydar was a member of the Ba'ath Party from his youth. He was commissioned into the Syrian Army in 1952 after a stint studying at the Homs Military Academy. After the Ba'ath Party seized power in a 1963 coup d'état, Haydar was put in charge of Syria's special forces and supported al-Assad in his rise to the presidency. During this time he was deployed to Lebanon during their civil war. Haydar opposed the 1984 coup d'état attempt led by Rifaat al-Assad, instead remaining loyal to Hafez al-Assad. After suffering an aneurysm and leaving his post in 1988, he returned to lead the special forces again in the early 1990s. At the time a Major General, he was formally removed from his position and then imprisoned in August 1994, though he was treated well during his brief prison stay and was released without a trial or public humiliation. Haydar died in Latakia at the age of 90.

Suhayl al-Hasan is a Syrian Army major general, currently serving as commander of its elite 25th Special Mission Forces Division. He graduated from the Syrian Arab Air Force academy in 1991, and served in many units of the Syrian Arab Air Forces and Air Defence Command, completing several training courses. After serving in the Syrian Arab Air Force and Syrian Arab Air Defence units, he joined the Air Force Intelligence service, where he was responsible for the training of the elements of the Special Operations Section. During the Syrian civil war, al-Hasan has served and commanded his troops during several major engagements, including Operation Canopus Star and the battle for the Shaer gas field. He is part of the new generation of field Syrian army commanders who emerged during the civil war. French newspaper Le Monde has claimed he could be a rival to Assad as leader of Syria.
