John Jewell (born 1909, date of death unknown) was an English footballer who played as an outside forward. He played for several clubs in East Lancashire during his career, and made three appearances in the Football League while playing for Nelson.
Born in Brierfield, Lancashire, Jewell played for nearby Colne Town as a youngster. He joined Burnley as an amateur in 1930. After failing to break into the first team, he signed for Football League Third Division North side Nelson in December of the same year. [1] After taking only one point from the previous five league matches, Jewell was drafted into the Nelson team as the selectors attempted to change the side's fortunes. [2] He was the fifth outside-right to be used by Nelson in the 1930–31 season, and made his debut on 20 December 1930 in the 2–0 win against Wrexham at Seedhill. [1] The local newspaper, the Nelson Leader , was impressed by Jewell's performance, claiming that he deserved an extended run in the team. [2]
Jewell was selected for the following match away at Hartlepools United but after Nelson suffered a 0–4 defeat, he was dropped from the team along with David Suttie. [3] After almost a month out of the side, Jewell was reinstated for the visit of Halifax Town on 17 January 1931, which finished in a 3–2 victory for Nelson. [3] He did not make another appearance for the club, and left soon afterwards. Jewell joined Lancashire Combination outfit Bacup Borough in November 1932, but his whereabouts thenceforth are untraced. [1]
Arthur Dawson was an English professional footballer who played as an outside forward. After starting his career in local football with Portsmouth Rovers, he had spells with Burnley and Lancaster Town in the late 1920s. Dawson played 10 matches in the Football League Third Division North for Nelson in the 1930–31 season.
John William Walmsley was an English professional association footballer who played predominantly as a wing half. Born in Accrington, Lancashire, he initially played Sunday league football for St Paul's and Accrington St Peter's. Walmsley started his senior playing career in Non-League football with Bacup Borough before joining Football League Third Division North side Nelson in 1921. He played just one match for Nelson, appearing at centre-half in the 2–4 defeat to Wrexham on 26 November 1921.
Stephen Spargo was an English professional association footballer who played as a half back. He usually played at centre-half, but was often deployed at wing-half throughout his career. Born in the town of Burnley, he initially played as an amateur in local league football before a move to hometown club Burnley in 1925. He spent four seasons in the Football League First Division with the club before moving to nearby Third Division North outfit Nelson in the summer of 1929. A transfer to Doncaster Rovers followed a year later. In 1932 he joined York City and later returned to Lancashire for a spell at Rochdale, before ending his career in non-league football with Burton Town.
Arthur Bate was an English professional footballer who played predominantly as a centre forward and occasionally as an outside right. Born in Little Hulton, he began his career playing amateur football with nearby club Walkden PM. During this time, Bate had a trial with Football League club Bury but this was unsuccessful and he instead transferred to Little Hulton United. Following a trial with Winsford United in August 1929, Bate joined Lancashire Combination outfit Chorley in October of the same year.
Ambrose Harris was an English professional footballer who played in a number of positions, mainly as a half-back. He played in the Football League with Nelson, making almost 60 first-team appearances for the club in a four-year spell. He also played with several non-league sides throughout his career, including Barnoldswick Town.
Wilfred Denwood was an English professional footballer who played as an outside forward. Born in Heywood, Lancashire, he played in the Football League for Nelson and New Brighton in the 1920s.
Harry Clayton was an English professional footballer who played in several defensive positions. Born in Nelson, Lancashire, he played four matches in the Football League for Nelson in the 1925–26 season.
Archie Howarth was an English association footballer who played as an outside forward. Born in Bury, he joined Football League Third Division North side Nelson at the age of 19. Howarth made his League debut on 6 September 1930, scoring in the 3–1 win against Darlington at Seedhill. He scored again in the following match, a 1–2 defeat to Lincoln City, and kept his place in the team for the next six games. However, after a 0–2 loss away at Doncaster Rovers on 11 October 1930, he was replaced by Henry Robinson and never made another appearance.
Robert Nuttall was an English footballer who played as a winger or as a centre forward during his career. Born in Tottington, Lancashire, he began his playing career with his hometown club before joining Football League Third Division North side Nelson in February 1931. One of Nelson's final signings as a League club, Nuttall made his debut at left-half in the 2–5 defeat to York City on 21 March 1931. He played as a centre forward in the team's following match, a 0–3 defeat away at Rotherham United. After two games out of the side, he returned for the 1–3 defeat against Wigan Borough. Nuttall made his final Football League appearance on the penultimate match of the 1930–31 season, the 1–5 loss to Wrexham on 25 April 1931. At the end of the campaign, Nelson failed their re-election to the League and subsequently joined the Lancashire Combination.
Tom Carmedy was an English professional footballer who played predominantly as a centre forward. He began his career in local-league football with his hometown club, Gainford, before joining Football League side Darlington in 1927. He later played for Nelson and Barrow, before returning to non-league football.
Ernest Percival Gillibrand was an English footballer who played predominantly as a centre forward, but could also play at outside forward. He had a somewhat nomadic career, representing no fewer than 12 different clubs. During his career, Gillibrand played over 500 matches and scored in excess of 500 goals in the Manchester Football League. While playing for Hyde United, he set a league record of 87 goals in one season. He had a short spell as a professional player in the early stages of his career, and made two appearances in the Football League for Nelson.
Joseph Adam Halliwell was an English professional footballer who played as a centre forward. He started his senior career with Preston North End and scored 10 goals in 22 league matches during the 1912–13 season as the team won the Football League Second Division. After making four further appearances for Preston at the start of the following campaign, Halliwell transferred to Barnsley in December 1913. He remained at Oakwell for 14 years and played 312 league games for the club, scoring 83 goals.
William Harper was an English professional footballer who played as a right-back. Born in Blackburn, Lancashire, he started his career in local football with Feniscowles in the Blackburn Amateur League. While playing for Feniscowles, he was scouted by former Everton and Blackpool player William Williams, who recommended Harper to Third Division North side Nelson. He subsequently joined Nelson in August 1924, initially as an amateur player.
Fred Mace was an English professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper. Born in Hayfield, Derbyshire, he began his playing career in local-league football with Godley Athletic and Copley Celtic. In 1919, he joined Lancashire Combination side Stalybridge Celtic. The club was one of the founder members of the Football League Third Division North two years later, and Mace made one league appearance for them. Stalybridge left the Football League in 1923 to play in the Cheshire County League, where Mace was described as one of the best goalkeepers in the competition.
Edward Manock was an English professional footballer who played as an inside forward. Born in Salford, he started his career as an amateur player in the Cheshire County League with Chester. He was signed by Football League Third Division North side Nelson on amateur terms in November 1929. Manock made his Nelson debut on 28 December 1929 in the 0–0 draw away at Southport, and the following month he was awarded a professional contract. He scored his first League goal in the 1–2 defeat against Stockport County at Seedhill. In total, he made 13 first-team appearances during his first season in Lancashire.
George McLaughlan was a Scottish professional footballer who played as an inside forward. During his career, he had spells at clubs in Scotland, England and Wales. He joined Celtic in 1923, but only made one league appearance for the club and was loaned out to Clydebank and Stenhousemuir. After leaving Celtic, McLaughlan had short stints at Clydebank and Mid Rhondda before joining Clyde in 1925. He was a part of the Clyde team that won the Scottish Cup that year, and in 1926 he moved to England with Football League Second Division side Darlington.
Frank Thomas Parry was an English professional footballer who played as an outside forward. Born in Aigburth, Liverpool, he began his playing career with Everton and made 12 league appearances for the club, making his debut in the 1–2 defeat to Manchester City on 26 December 1922. During his time at Goodison Park, he was never able to replace Sam Chedgzoy as the club's first choice right-winger, and in June 1926 he joined Football League Second Division side Grimsby Town. However, despite being described as "a skilful and polished winger", Parry again struggled to break into the first team and played just one league match in the 1926–27 season.
Henry Ridley was an English professional footballer who played as an outside forward. He spent the majority of his career in non-League football, but made 31 appearances in the Football League for Nelson during the 1928–29 season.
Henry Robinson was an English professional footballer who played as an outside forward. He grew up in Chilton, County Durham, and as a youth played for the Chilton School team. Robinson went on to assist Kirk Merrington, Shildon Athletic and Chilton Colliery Railway before joining Football League First Division side Sunderland on amateur terms in September 1929. Although he was awarded a professional contract the following month, he failed to break into the first team and spent the entire season playing with the reserves in the North Eastern League.
George Robert Spence was an English professional footballer who played as an outside forward. Born in Burnley, he started his career in local-league football with Colne Town. On 8 October 1927, Spence signed as an amateur with Football League Third Division North side Nelson and made his debut for the club in the 3–3 draw with Chesterfield later the same day alongside fellow new signing, goalkeeper William Bossons. He was awarded a professional contract two weeks later and went on to keep his place in the starting eleven for the following seven matches. Spence scored his first goal in senior football in the 4–2 win against Hartlepools United at Seedhill on 5 November 1927, a match which also featured a hat-trick from centre forward Buchanan Sharp.
