John Roderick McKechnie AO KC (born 1 November 1950) is the Commissioner of the Corruption and Crime Commission of Western Australia. He is a former Justice of the Supreme Court of Western Australia,the highest ranking court in the Australian State of Western Australia,and formerly served as the State's first Director of Public Prosecutions.
He attended Scotch College from 1963 until 1967,then graduated in law from the University of Western Australia in 1972. He then took articles with Jackson McDonald &Co,before joining the Crown Law Department. He became a Queen's Counsel in 1989,and then in December 1991 was appointed by the Government of Western Australia as the state's first Director of Public Prosecutions. During his eight-year term in this role,the department processed on average 2,500 prosecutions per year.
On 2 March 1999,he was sworn in as a justice of the Supreme Court of Western Australia. [1]
He retired from the Supreme Court on 22 April 2015 to take up an appointment as the Commissioner of the Corruption and Crime Commission. [2]
On 28 April 2015,McKechnie was first appointed as the Commissioner of the Corruption and Crime Commission for a five-year term. [3] [4] During his tenure,the Corruption and Crime Commission found that a State Parliamentarian had misused an electoral allowance. [5] McKechnie was involved in controversy following the expiration of his term as Commissioner on 25 April 2020,when his reappointment to the position was blocked by a bipartisan Parliamentary joint standing committee. [6] [7] In June 2021,the Western Australian Parliament passed legislation reappointing McKechnie as Commissioner without requiring the agreement of the joint standing committee, [6] to take effect on 28 June 2021. [7]
McKechnie was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in the 2024 Australia Day Honours for "distinguished service to the law,to the judiciary,and to the community of Western Australia". [8]
Ian Douglas Temby is an Australian barrister. He was the first Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions and the first Commissioner of the New South Wales Independent Commission Against Corruption. He conducted the Royal Commission into the Finance Broking Industry in Western Australia in 2001.
Brian Ross Martin is an Australian jurist. He was a judge of the Supreme Court of South Australia before being appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory in 2004. Andrew Mark Mallard was a British-born Australian who was wrongfully convicted of murder in 1995 and sentenced to life imprisonment. Almost 12 years later,after an appeal to the High Court of Australia,his conviction was quashed and a retrial ordered. However,the charges against him were dropped and Mallard was released. At the time,the Director of Public Prosecutions stated that Mallard remained the prime suspect and that if further evidence became available he could still be prosecuted. He was released from prison in 2006 after his conviction was quashed by the High Court,and was paid $3.25 million compensation by the state government. The Western Australian Commission on Crime and Corruption investigated whether there was misconduct by any public officer associated with this case and made findings against two policemen and a senior prosecutor.
The Corruption and Crime Commission is an independent anti-corruption integrity agency established on 1 January 2004 to improve the integrity of the Western Australian public sector and investigate allegations of misconduct against public officers. It took over from the Anti-Corruption Commission and has jurisdiction over all State Government departments,instrumentalities and boards as well as universities and local governments. This includes more than 148,000 employees in 278 public authorities.
The Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC) is an independent Queensland Government integrity agency created to combat and reduce the incidence of major crime and to continuously improve the integrity of,and to reduce the incidence of misconduct in,the Queensland public sector. Formerly the Crime and Misconduct Commission (CMC) 2002–2014. The CCC also has a witness protection function. The commission was established on 1 January 2002,when the former Criminal Justice Commission and the Queensland Crime Commission were merged into a single entity under the name Crime and Misconduct Commission.

The Honourable Christopher David Steytler AO QC is a former judge of the Supreme Court of Western Australia and President of the Court of Appeal. He was a member of the Supreme Court from 1994 to 2009 and was the Parliamentary Inspector of the Corruption and Crime Commission from 2009 to 2012.
Major General Leonard William Roberts-Smith,is a former Justice of the Supreme Court of Western Australia. From February 2005,he was one of the inaugural Judges of the Court of Appeal Division,having been first appointed to the Supreme Court on 6 November 2000. From May 2007,he served as Commissioner of the Corruption and Crime Commission of Western Australia,having been appointed for a five-year term. He retired on 31 January 2011.
Peter David McClellan is a retired judge of the New South Wales Court of Appeal who served between February 2013 and February 2018. McClellan was the Chief Royal Commissioner of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse from January 2013 to December 2017. He was previously the Chief Judge in Common Law in the Supreme Court,a position to which he was appointed in 2005.
Christine Ann Wheeler is a former judge in the Supreme Court of Western Australia,from 1996 to 2005. From 2005 to 2010,she was an inaugural judge of the Court of Appeal. She retired from the Supreme Court on 25 February 2010.
