John Olson is an American experimental musician, visual artist and writer from Detroit, Michigan. Olson is mostly known for his involvement with the noise rock band Wolf Eyes. His music is often made with handmade woodwind and brass instruments, various electronics, usually processed using effect units. [1] [2] [3]

Biography

In an interview with City Pulse , Olson said he was inspired to begin playing music after being invited to a punk gig in their hometown of Lansing, Michigan. [4] In 1991, John Olson started the label American Tapes. [5] Olson was a founding member of the band Universal Indians in 1993. [6]

In 2000 he joined Wolf Eyes, after his bandmate from Universal Indians, Aaron Dilloway, invited him for a studio session. [3] [7]

In 2003, he started the duo Dead Machines along with his wife Tovah Olson (née O'Rourke). This went on to become Olson's most successful project after Wolf Eyes. [8]

In 2016, he published Life Is a Ripoff, a book of 365 record reviews, on Third Man Books. The reviews included range from extreme metal to obscure Christian records. [9]

Olson's Instagram account Inzanejohnny has gained popularity for its "chaotic shitposting", [10] the leading alternative weekly newspaper Now to call Olson "some sort of bizarro influencer." [11]

American Tapes

Olson started the American Tapes label in 1991, which publishes Olson's own music and the music of other experimental artists. As of 2007, the label had over 700 releases. [5] The label is known for the unique design of the tape cases, made of various media collages and abstract shapes and also their elaborate packaging in early days. [12] Due to their limited runs of releases, the label became a target for collectors.

AIDS Wolf was a Canadian noise rock band, founded in Montreal in 2003, by the graphic arts team of Chloe Lum and Yannick Desranleau, otherwise known as Seripop. They were joined by Myles Broscoe, Chris Taylor, Nick Kuepfer, André Guérette, and Alex Moskos. The band was known for playing modified consumer electronics and analog synthesizers, for giving creative names to instruments, and for being “weird for the sake of being weird.” On their label's band page, they stated "We are a fucking cult and will cause you harm and ill will," then added "The 9 Principles of AIDS Wolf".

Neil Campbell is a British musician, notable for his vast catalogue and his many collaborations. In 2005, The Wire declared that he, Richard Youngs and Matthew Bower had "provided the map co-ordinates for much of what passed for a post-punk UK underground during most of the 80s and 90s". Pitchfork media have referred to him as "one of the most important experimental musicians of the last 20 years".

Jimmy Edgar is an American conceptual artist and sound designer from Detroit, Michigan. Influenced by minimalism, Yves Klein and Immaterialism, early in their career Jimmy released two hip-hop glitch albums under the names Michaux and Kristuit Salu and Morris Nightingale. Their first solo album Color Strip (2006) came out on Warp Records after they signed to the label at age 18. This release was followed by XXX (2010) on !K7 Records in 2010. After their last solo LP Majenta (2012), Jimmy has released several EPS on Jimmys own imprint New Reality Now, often designing the album covers with Pilar Zeta.

Aaron Dilloway is an American experimental musician. He is an improvisor and composer originally from Brighton, Michigan, who works with the manipulation of 8-Track tape loops in combination with voice, tape delays and various organic and electronic sound sources. A founding member of the industrial noise group Wolf Eyes, Dilloway now resides in Oberlin, Ohio, where he runs Hanson Records and Mailorder.
