John Rudzinski is an American football coach and former player. He currently serves as the defensive coordinator at Virginia. He had spent his previous coaching career with Air Force, dating back to 2005. Upon graduation from the United States Air Force Academy, he became a 2nd lieutenant in the United States Air Force.
In the 2020 season at his alma mater, Rudzinski's Falcon defense ranked 3rd nationwide in scoring defense at 15.0 points allowed. [1] In the 2021 season, Rudzinski's Falcon defense ranked 4th nationally in total defense, with an average of just 296 yards allowed. [1] Rudzinski's defenses are foundationally built to stop the run, and are superb at preventing rushing yards. [2] His defenses have on at least two occasions ranked in the national top 10 for run defense. [2]
After graduating from Notre Dame Academy in Green Bay, Wisconsin, Rudzinski played linebacker for the Air Force Falcons from 2002 to 2005. He was a three-year letterman, and was the team leader in tackles during that three-year span. He was a captain during his final two years on the team, and was an all-Mountain West honorable mention as a senior. He participated in the 2006 East–West Shrine Game following his senior season. [3]
Rudzinski joined the coaching staff at Air Force immediately following his graduation in 2005, holding a graduate assistant position for two years. He then transitioned to Charleston Air Force Base in North Charleston, South Carolina, where he served as a maintenance operations officer from 2007 to 2010. During that time, he served as a defensive assistant at First Baptist School in Charleston. [3] Since returning to Air Force in 2010, Rudzinski has served as a defensive assistant, recruiting coordinator, outside linebackers coach, and defensive backs coach. [4] He was promoted to defensive coordinator halfway through the 2018 season following Steve Russ's departure for the Carolina Panthers. [5]
Rudzinski is originally from Green Bay, Wisconsin and graduated from Notre Dame Academy in 2001. [6] He has a wife, Lauren, and they have five children. [3]
Randy Leonard Shannon is an American football coach and former player who is currently the linebackers coach and co-defensive coordinator for the Florida State Seminoles football program. Shannon was the head coach at the University of Miami from 2007 to 2010 and has served as an assistant coach for the National Football League (NFL)'s Miami Dolphins and several college teams, including stints as the defensive coordinator for the Miami Hurricanes, the Florida Gators, and the UCF Knights. He won the Frank Broyles Award as the nation's top collegiate assistant coach while at Miami in 2001.
Kent Lex Baer is an American college football coach. He most recently was the defensive coordinator at the University of Montana, a position he had held since 2018. Baer served as the interim head football coach at the University of Notre Dame for one game in 2004 and at San Jose State University for one game in 2012.
Russell Dean Pees is a former American football coach who spent 18 seasons in the National Football League (NFL). He has served as the defensive coordinator for the New England Patriots, Baltimore Ravens, Tennessee Titans, and Atlanta Falcons. Pees was also the head coach at Kent State University from 1998 to 2003, compiling a record of 17–51.
Johnny Chavis, nicknamed "The Chief", is an American football coach who is the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach for the Birmingham Stallions of the United States Football League (USFL). He previously served as defensive coordinator for the Arkansas Razorbacks football team and former defensive coordinator, linebacker coach, and associate head coach at the Tennessee Volunteers football, LSU Tigers football, and Texas A&M Aggies football programs.
Serafino Dante "Foge" Fazio was an American football player and coach. He served as the head football coach at the University of Pittsburgh from 1982 to 1985. Fazio was an assistant coach with five teams in the National Football League (NFL) between 1988 and 2002.

Greg Mattison is a former American football coach, and former player. He spent most of his career in college football as a defensive coach. Mattison coached at Michigan for eleven years, at Notre Dame for seven years, at Florida for three years, including the 2006 national championship team, Ohio State, where he served two years. He also served as a defensive assistant for the Baltimore Ravens of the NFL.
Brian VanGorder is an American football coach and former player. He was the defensive coordinator at Bowling Green State University, a position he assumed in 2019. Prior to that, he was defensive coordinator at the University of Louisville. He served as the head football coach at Wayne State University from 1992 to 1994, and Georgia Southern University in 2006, compiling a career college football record of 19–25. VanGorder was the defensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons of the National Football League (NFL) from 2008 to 2011, and also worked in the same capacity for the University of Georgia (2001–2004) and Auburn University (2012). VanGorder is married to the former Ruth Jones. His children are Molloy, Morgan, Mack, Montgomery, Malone, and Freddie.
