Professor John Danwell Kalenga Saka is the current Vice-Chancellor of Mzuzu University who replaced Dr.Robert Ridley who withdrew his services in 2017. [1]
Saka was also the former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Malawi who preceded Professor Mkali Idruss Samson Sajidu . [2] [3]
He was born in Malawi and educated at Chancellor College,University of Malawi and the University of East Anglia (PhD,Chemistry). [4] He subsequently became lecturer in Physical Chemistry at the University of Malawi in 1986 where he became a Professor in 2002. He was installed as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Malawi on 2 December 2013. He is also chairperson of the Malawi National Examinations Board. [5]
John Zenus Ungapake Tembo was a Malawian politician who served for years as President of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP). Tembo comes from the Dedza District in central Malawi,and he was a teacher by profession. Beginning in the 1960s he was an important politician in Malawi,and he was a key figure in the regime of Hastings Banda (1964–1994). He has been variously described as "physically slight,ascetic,fastidious" and "cunning". He was replaced as President of the MCP in August 2013.

Mzuzu University is one of the principal universities of Malawi. The university is located in Mzuzu City,in the northern region of Malawi. It was founded in 1997 after being transformed from a teachers training college established in 1970s. It accepted its first students in 1999. At the time the university opened its doors,the Chancellor was Malawi's former president Bakili Muluzi and the first Vice-Chancellor was Professor Terrence Davis. Professor Peter Mwanza,who later entered politics and became a cabinet minister,was active in establishing the university. He was Chairman of the University Council,and later Vice-Chancellor.

Arthur Peter Mutharika is a Malawian politician and lawyer who was President of Malawi from May 2014 to June 2020. Mutharika has worked in the field of international justice,specialising in international economic law,international law and comparative constitutional law. He informally served as an adviser to his older brother,President Bingu wa Mutharika,on issues of foreign and domestic policy from the onset of his election campaign until the President's death on 5 April 2012.
Professor Peter Nelson Mwanza is a Malawian politician. He was appointed Minister of Lands,Housing and Urban Development in the government of President Bingu wa Mutharika of Malawi on 17 June 2009. He was reassigned to become Minister of Agriculture and Food Security in a cabinet reshuffle on 9 August 2010.
The 2011 Malawi protests were protests aimed at winning political and economic reforms or concessions from the government of Malawi. On 20 July,Malawian organisations protested against perceived poor economic management and poor governance by President Bingu wa Mutharika and his Democratic Progressive Party. After the first two days of protests,18 deaths,98 serious injuries and 275 arrests had been reported. Further demonstrations were organised on 17 August and 21 September The first protest was later cancelled due to the intervention of a UN representative in initiating a dialogue;however,the talks broke down with more protests planned for Red Wednesday through a national vigil.
Catherine Gotani Hara is a Malawian politician who has been the Speaker of the National Assembly since June 2019,the first woman to hold the position.
Robert Chasowa was a University of Malawi engineering student and political activist. Chasowa was the chair of a student activist group,Youth for Democracy (YFD). The YFD printed a weekly pro-democracy and anti-Bingu wa Mutharika administration newsletter called the Weekly Political Update that has circulation around the UNIMA campus. His mysterious death made international headlines but was ruled a suicide under the Bingu wa Mutharika administration. In October 2012,the results of a commission of inquiry led by President Joyce Banda's administration ruled his death as a murder.
Professor Blessings Chinsinga is a Malawian lecturer at the centre of the Malawi Academic Freedom Stand off and eventual protests. He was a Senior Lecturer in Development Administration,Public Policy Analysis and Institutions,and Development at University of Malawi's Chancellor College.
Peter Mukhito is the former Inspector General of Police in Malawi. He comes from Chiradzulu District. He has gained notoriety for his involvement in interrogating Blessings Chinsinga which began the stand off for academic freedom in Malawi between Chinsinga and President Bingu wa Mutharika. He was also involved in the investigation in the death of Robert Chasowa. Mukhito was also the Inspector General during the 2011 Malawian national protest against President Bingu wa Mutharika,that saw 19 Malawians killed.

Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera is a Malawian politician and theologian who has served as President of Malawi and minister of defence since June 2020. Qabaniso Malewezi,also known as Q,is a Malawian musician and poet. A former producer for the hip-hop band Real Elements,he has since authored several collections of poems including the audio collection People. In 2015 he received an honorary doctorate from Mzuzu University.

Vera Kamtukule is a Malawian author,writer,publisher,activist and politician,who holds a ministerial position in the Cabinet of Malawi. Vera Kamtukule was appointed Minister of Tourism on 31 January 2023. Until her current appointment Vera served as the Minister of Labour since 26 January 2022 and as deputy Minister of Labour following the 2020 Malawian presidential election. In 2021 Vera Kamtukule assumed her role as Chair of the SADC Employment and Labour Sector.
