Johnny McBride (born 9 May 1977) is a Gaelic footballer who played for the Derry county team in the 1990s and 2000s. He won an Ulster Senior Football Championship and two National Leagues with the county, as well as Ulster Minor, Ulster Under 21 and All-Ireland Under-21 Football Championships.

McBride continues to play club football for Naomh Pádraig An Lúb. As captain, he was instrumental in helping An Lúb win the 2003 Ulster Senior Club Football Championship and Derry Championships.

He is a versatile player who can play anywhere in the forward line or in the midfield line for An Lúb.

Playing career

Inter-county

McBride played three years of Minor football for Derry (1993–1995). He reached the Ulster Minor Championship final against Tyrone in 1993, and despite McBride putting in a man of the match display, [1] Derry were defeated. They however won the 1995 Ulster Minor Championship, with McBride as captain [1] and finished runners-up to Westmeath in that year's All-Ireland Minor final. In 1997 he captained [2] Derry when they won the Ulster Under-21 and All-Ireland Under-21 Football Championships, [3] defeating Fermanagh and Meath in the respective finals.

He made his Derry Senior debut in late 1995 (in the 1996 National League) against Kerry. [1] Derry went on to win that year's competition. In 1998, Derry won the Ulster Senior Championship, but lost to Galway in that year's All-Ireland Championship semi-final. In 2000 he won another National League with Derry, defeating Meath in the final. [3] Derry also reached that year's Ulster final, but lost out to Armagh. Derry reached two more All-Ireland semi-finals in 2001 and 2004, but were defeated by Galway and Kerry respectively.

McBride was named Derry captain for the 2006 season, he first An Lúb player to hold the honour. He announced his retirement from inter-county football at the end of the 2006 campaign. [4]

McBride had a successful underage club career including winning two Derry Minor Championships and two Ulster Minor Club Football Championships [1] in 1993 and 1995, and was captain of the 1995 side. [5] In 2003, he captained the club to their first Derry Senior Football Championship in 67 years, and they also went on to win the Ulster Senior Club Football Championship.

McBride won an All-Ireland Colleges title with his school. He captained the University of Ulster Coleraine team in the Sigerson Cup while a student. [2]

Tony "The Tiger" Scullion is a former dual player of Gaelic games who played Gaelic football and hurling with Derry in the 1980s and 1990s. He is chiefly known as a footballer and was part of Derry's 1993 All-Ireland Championship winning side, also winning Ulster Senior Football Championships in 1987 and 1993. With Derry footballers he usually played in the full-back line and is regarded as one of the best full-backs of his generation. Scullion played club football and hurling with St Colm's GAC Ballinascreen.

Henry Downey is a former dual player of Gaelic games, who played as a Gaelic footballer at senior level for the Derry county team in the late 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s, where he usually played in at centre half back. He was part of Derry's 1993 All-Ireland Championship winning side, where he was captain. He also won two Ulster Senior Football Championships and four National League medals with Derry. He also played hurling.

Seán Marty Lockhart is an Irish dual player of Gaelic games who plays Gaelic football for the Derry county team. He also won an All Star for his performances in the 1998 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship. He plays club football for St Mary's Banagher. As a dual player, Lockhart also plays hurling for Banagher, and has in the past also hurled for Derry.

Damian Cassidy is a former Gaelic football manager and former player for the Derry county team in the 1980s and 1990s, who was part of the county's 1993 All-Ireland Championship winning side, starting at left half forward. He also won two Ulster Senior Championship medals, three National League titles, and a range of under-age inter-county medals with the county. Cassidy played his club football for Bellaghy Wolfe Tones and won five Derry Championships and the 1994 Ulster Senior Club Football Championships with the club. For both club and county he usually played as a forward. Cassidy was also a talented hurler.

Sean O'Connell was a Gaelic football manager and player who featured for the Derry county team in the late 1950s, 1960s and 1970s and was on the Derry side that finished runners-up to Dublin in the 1958 All-Ireland Championship – winning an Ulster Championship with the county that year, and three more in 1970, 1975 and 1976. For his performances in the 1967 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, O'Connell won a Cú Chulainn Award.
