Brian Thomas Burke is an Australian former politician who was the 23rd premier of Western Australia from 25 February 1983 to his resignation on 25 February 1988. He was a member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly from 30 March 1973 to 25 February 1988,representing the electoral districts of Balga and Balcatta at various points,and was the leader of the Australian Labor Party in Western Australia from 18 September 1981 to 25 February 1988. Burke studied law at the University of Western Australia for one year before dropping out. During the 1960s and early 1970s,he worked as a journalist for The West Australian newspaper,6PM radio station,and Seven News Perth. He was elected to Parliament at the 1973 Balcatta state by-election,becoming one of the most popular local members over the following years. In 1981,he became the leader of the Labor Party in a leadership spill. He led the Labor Party to its first election victory since 1971 at the 1983 Western Australian state election,defeating the Liberal-National government of Ray O'Connor.

A member of the Labor Party,he was first elected to the Legislative Assembly at the 1996 state election,representing the seat of Willagee. In the Gallop ministry,which took office following the 2001 election,Carpenter was Minister for Education,as well as holding several other portfolios. He replaced Geoff Gallop as premier in January 2006,following Gallop's resignation,but Labor lost office following a hung parliament at the 2008 election,with Colin Barnett becoming premier as the leader of a minority Liberal Party government. Carpenter resigned from parliament in 2009,and until 2018 held a senior management position with Wesfarmers.

She is best known for her role as the minister for planning and infrastructure during the construction of the Mandurah line. Born in Melbourne,she moved to Perth to study at the University of Western Australia,graduating with a Bachelor of Arts and later with a law degree. She worked for the Department of Employment before practising as a lawyer between 1986 and 1992. During this time,she also served on the Perth City Council. In 1976,MacTiernan joined the Australian Labor Party,and at the 1993 Western Australian state election,she was elected to the Legislative Council's East Metropolitan Region. She became a shadow minister in October 1994,and she was transferred to the Legislative Assembly at the 1996 state election,winning the seat of Armadale.
