Jon Patrick Newlee (born February 26, 1959) was the head women's basketball coach at the University of Idaho. [1] He previously served for six years as the head women's basketball coach at Idaho State University.

Early life

Son of Chaffey Community College basketball coach Barney Newlee, [2] Jon Newlee was born and raised in Rialto, California. [3] At Eisenhower High School in Rialto, Newlee played basketball and tennis; among his basketball teammates was future NFL Hall of Famer Ronnie Lott. [3] [4] Newlee then attended Chaffey Community College and played two years of basketball before transferring to San Diego State University in 1979. [3] Newlee graduated from San Diego State in 1982 with a bachelor's degree in physical education. [5]

Coaching career

From 1983 to 1986, Newlee was an assistant coach at Saint Mary's. [5] [6]

Newlee got his first head coaching position in 1986 at Southwestern College, a junior college in Chula Vista, California. In three seasons, he turned around its women's basketball program from two wins in his first season to a 22–6 record in the 1988–89 season. Newlee earned Pacific Coast Athletic Conference Coach of the Year honors as a result. [6]

After Southwestern, Newlee returned to the major college ranks as an assistant with UTSA from 1989 to 1991, SMU from 1991 to 1999 under Rhonda Rompola, and Hawaii from 1999 to 2002 under Vince Goo. [6]

After six seasons as head coach at Idaho State, Newlee became the ninth head coach in University of Idaho women's basketball history on April 15, 2008. [5]

The Big Sky Conference women's basketball tournament is held at the end of each women's college basketball regular season. The tournament was first conducted by the Big Sky Conference at the end of the 1988–89 season, the first in which the conference sponsored women's sports. The Big Sky includes in its history the preceding six years of the Mountain West Athletic Conference, a women's athletic league consisting mostly of Big Sky members that operated from 1982 to 1988, so the inaugural tournament was in March 1983.. The tournament winner receives the Big Sky's automatic bid into the NCAA tournament.

The 2014–15 Idaho Vandals women's basketball team represented the University of Idaho during the 2014–15 NCAA Division I women's basketball season. The Vandals, led by seventh year head coach Jon Newlee, played their home games at the Cowan Spectrum with a couple of early season games at Memorial Gym, and were members of the Big Sky Conference. This was their first year returning to the Big Sky, the conference they were charter members of and called home from 1988–1996. They finished the season 14–15, 8–10 in Big Sky play to finish in a tie for eighth place. They failed to qualify for the Big Sky women's tournament.

The 2015–16 Idaho Vandals women's basketball team represented the University of Idaho during the 2015–16 NCAA Division I women's basketball season. The Vandals, led by eighth year head coach Jon Newlee, played their home games at the Cowan Spectrum with a five early season games at Memorial Gym, and were members of the Big Sky Conference. They finished the season 24–10, 13–5 in Big Sky play to finish in a 3 way tie for second place. They won the Big Sky tournament for the first time since 1985 when they rejoin the Big Sky Conference since 2014 and earn an automatic trip to the NCAA women's tournament where they lost in the first round to Baylor.

The 2016–17 Idaho Vandals women's basketball team represented the University of Idaho during the 2016–17 NCAA Division I women's basketball season. The Vandals, led by ninth year head coach Jon Newlee, played their home games at the Cowan Spectrum with early season games at Memorial Gym, and were members of the Big Sky Conference. They finished the season 19–15, 11–7 in Big Sky play to finish in fifth place. They advanced to the quarterfinals of the Big Sky women's tournament where they lost to Eastern Washington. They were invited to the Women's Basketball Invitational where defeated Utah State in the first round, Eastern Washington in the quarterfinals before losing in the semifinals to Rice.

The 2017–18 Idaho Vandals women's basketball team represents the University of Idaho during the 2017–18 NCAA Division I women's basketball season. The Vandals, led by tenth year head coach Jon Newlee, play their home games at the Cowan Spectrum with early season games at Memorial Gym, and are members of the Big Sky Conference. They finished the season 19–14, 13–5 in Big Sky play to finish in second place. They advanced to the championship game of the Big Sky women's tournament where they lost to Northern Colorado. They received an automatic bid to the Women's National Invitation Tournament where they lost to UC Davis in the first round.

The 2018–19 Idaho Vandals women's basketball team represents the University of Idaho during the 2018–19 NCAA Division I women's basketball season. The Vandals, led by eleventh year head coach Jon Newlee, play their home games at the Cowan Spectrum with early season games at Memorial Gym, and are members of the Big Sky Conference. They finished the season 22–12, 16–4 in Big Sky play to win the Big Sky regular season championship. They advanced to the semifinals of the Big Sky women's tournament where they lost to Portland State. They received an automatic bid to the Women's National Invitation Tournament where defeated Loyola Marymount and Denver in the first and second rounds before losing to Arizona in the third round.

The 2019–20 Idaho Vandals men's basketball team represents the University of Idaho in the 2019–20 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Vandals, led by interim head coach Zac Claus, play their home games at the Cowan Spectrum, with a few early season games at Memorial Gym, in Moscow, Idaho, as members of the Big Sky Conference.

The University of Idaho's football program, nicknamed the "Vandals", began in 1893.
