Jonas Sanker is an American football safety for the Virginia Cavaliers.

Early life and high school

Sanker attended high school at the The Covenant School. Coming out of high school, Sanker was rated as a three star recruit, where he decided to commit to play college football for the Boston College Eagles. [1] [2] However, Sanker decided to de-commit from Boston College, where he flipped his commitment to play for the Virginia Cavaliers. [3] [4]

College career

In Sanker's first collegiate season in 2021, he notched five tackles. [5] In week four of the 2022 season, Sanker recorded his first career interception versus Syracuse. [6] Sanker finished the 2022 season totaling 63 tackles with half a tackle being for a loss, two pass deflections, an interception, a fumble recovery, and a forced fumble. [7] [8] During the 2023 season, Sanker led the Cavaliers in tackles with 107 while also making four for a loss, 11 pass deflections, two fumble recoveries, and three forced fumbles. [9] [10] For his performance in the 2023 season, Sanker was named first team all-ACC. [11]

The team was led by head coach Tony Bennett, in his seventh year, and played their home games at John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, Virginia as members of the Atlantic Coast Conference. They finished the season 29–8, 13–5 in ACC play to finish in a tie for second place. They defeated Georgia Tech and Miami (FL) to advance to the championship game of the ACC tournament where they lost to North Carolina. They received an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament as a #1 seed where they defeated Hampton, Butler, and Iowa State to advance to the Elite Eight where they lost to fellow ACC member Syracuse.
