Jonathan Asake (born 1965 [1] ) is a Nigerian politician and former lawmaker. [2] He was a candidate in the 2023 Kaduna State gubernatorial election under the Labour Party. [3] [4] [5] Prior to his nomination as gubernatorial candidate, he served as the President of Southern Kaduna People's Union (SOKAPU) [2] [6]

In an interview granted him by Channels Television's, Sunrise Daily, he clarified that Labour Party on whose platform he runs is not a Southern Kaduna people's agenda. In his words, "The Labour Party is not a southern people's agenda, it is an expression of hope for people that felt that they have been left out, we have campaigned across the local government and indeed the teeming masses in all the local government have felt that they have been left out". [7]

Controversies

Asake was accused of mismanaging the ₦200 million donation for the Southern Kaduna IDPs by the Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike in 2022. This came when he declared his intentions to run for the office of the Governor of Kaduna State. In his response, he said

"Everybody who knows me that I will not indulge in such act, so, I just laughed over it. When I am joining politics, l left over N60m in the coffers of SOKAPU."

The 2023 Nigerian gubernatorial elections were held for state governors in 31 out of 36 Nigerian states. All but three elections were held on 18 March—concurrent with elections to every state house of assembly, three weeks after the presidential election and National Assembly elections—while the Imo State, Kogi State, and Bayelsa State elections will be held on 11 November. The last regular gubernatorial elections for all states were in 2019. All states have a two term limit for Governors which makes 18 incumbent governors ineligible for re-election.

Incumbent APC Governor Nasir Ahmad el-Rufai was term-limited and could not seek re-election to a third term. Senator Uba Sani retained the office for the APC by a margin of less than 1% — under 11,000 votes — over first runner-up and PDP nominee Isa Ashiru, a former member of the House of Representatives.

Bola Tinubu, the former governor of Lagos State and nominee of the All Progressives Congress won the election with 36.61% of the vote, just under 8.8 million votes to defeat over runners-up former vice president Atiku Abubakar and former governor of Anambra State Peter Obi. Mathew Donatus is a Nigerian politician and House of Representatives member elect for Kaura Federal Constituency of Kaduna State. Running on the Labour Party ticket an unpopular party in the area, and having no campaign funds, he was lowly rated in the election. His surprise victory at the poll was a major upset to the ruling party APC and the major opposition party PDP in the state. He is widely known as an Okada rider who defeated incumbent House of Representatives member.

The immediate origins of killings in Southern Kaduna especially in the 2010s and early 2020s can be traced to the events that brought in Goodluck Jonathan into power in 2010 as the President of Nigeria, and escalated after the presidential election in 2011, which he won.

Southern Kaduna People's Union (SOKAPU) is a socio-cultural organization, acting as an umbrella body representing the people of Southern Kaduna, Kaduna State, Nigeria. In a statement made by the chairman, Southern Kaduna Leadership Council (SKLC), Ishaya Dary Akau, in September 2022, SOKAPU was mentioned as a member of the council. However, many are uncomfortable with the SOKAPU being berated as a member of the SKLC. As of March 2024, the SOKAPU National President was Samuel Tabara Kato.
