Field hockey is a team sport structured in standard hockey format, in which each team plays with 11 players in total, made up of 10 field players and a goalkeeper. Teams must move a hockey ball around a field by hitting it with a hockey stick towards the rival team's shooting circle and then into the goal. The match is won by the team that scores the most goals. Matches are played on grass, watered turf, artificial turf, or indoor boarded surface.

Avoca Hockey Club is a field hockey club based at Newpark Comprehensive School in Blackrock, Dublin. The club was originally founded in 1895 and a women's team was added in 1973. Avoca enters various men's and women's teams in junior, senior and veterans leagues and cup competitions affiliated to the Leinster Hockey Association. Avoca men have won both the Men's Irish Senior Cup and the Men's Irish Junior Cup. Avoca Women won the Irish Hockey Trophy in 2022. The club has also represented Ireland in European competitions, finishing third in the 1993 EuroHockey Club Trophy.
The Great Britain men's national field hockey team represents the United Kingdom in some international field hockey tournaments such as the Summer Olympics and the FIH Pro League. Michael Watt is a former Ireland men's field hockey international. Between 2006 and 2016 Watt made 201 appearances and scored 54 goals for Ireland. He was a member of the Ireland team that won the bronze medal at the 2015 Men's EuroHockey Nations Championship. He also represented Ireland at the 2016 Summer Olympics. At club level, Watt has won the Irish Senior Cup with Instonians, the Scottish Hockey Cup with Grange and the Men's Irish Hockey League with Lisnagarvey. He also played and scored for both Grange and Surbiton in the Euro Hockey League.
Christopher Cargo is an Irish field hockey player who plays as a forward or midfielder for English club Hampstead & Westminster. He scored 28 goals in 195 matches from 2009 to 2019 for the Irish national team. He competed for Ireland at the 2016 Summer Olympics.
Paul Gleghorne is an Ireland men's field hockey international. He was a member of the Ireland team that won the bronze medal at the 2015 Men's EuroHockey Nations Championship. He also represented Ireland at the 2016 Summer Olympics and the 2018 Men's Hockey World Cup. At club level, he has won the Men's Irish Hockey League with Lisnagarvey. Gleghorne comes from a family of field hockey internationals. His older brother, Mark, has played for Ireland, England and Great Britain. Two of his aunts, Margaret Gleghorne and Jackie McWilliams, were also Ireland and Great Britain women's internationals.
Sean Murray is an Irish field hockey player who plays as a midfielder for Belgian Hockey League club Gantoise and the Irish national team.
Megan Frazer is an Ireland women's field hockey international. She was a member of the Ireland team that played in the 2018 Women's Hockey World Cup. She has also captained the Ireland team. Frazer was a member of the Maryland Terrapins team that won the 2010 and 2011 NCAA Division I Field Hockey Championships. Between 2010 and 2012 she was named three times as an NFHCA All-American and in 2011 she also won the Honda Sports Award. Frazer has also won Irish Senior Cup titles with Ulster Elks.
