Joni Mabe (born 1957 [1] ) is an American book artist. [2] [3] [4] A native of Georgia, she has lived in Athens, Georgia and Cornelia, Georgia. She is the creator of the Everything Elvis Museum. [5] [6] Her family home is in Cornelia, Georgia, the site of the Laudermilk Boarding House, which is on the National Register of Historic Places and contains both her own family memorabilia and large personal collection of Elvis Presley collectibles and artifacts. [5] [6] [7] [8] She is a Master of Fine Arts recipient from the University of Georgia.
Joni Mabe's exhibitions include: a selection of her original, one-of-a kind artist's books shown in an international book art exhibition, Art ex Libris at Artspace Gallery in Richmond, Virginia in 1994.; [9] The American South Everything Elvis, Royal Festival Hall Galleries; The Alternative Page, Hastings-en-Hudson: The Gallery at Hastings, 1996; Art of Concourse E., Atlanta: Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport; 50 Days of Elvis. [10] She was featured in No Outsiders: The 2019 Atlanta Biennial at Atlanta Contemporary, with a piece from the BURNAWAY in 2019. [11]
Mabe's exhibition Hollywood of The Southeastern Artists in the Atlanta Biennial was reviewed in the 2019 article "The Artists in the Atlanta Biennial May Not Be Mainstream—But Don’t Call Them Outsiders" by Maura Callahan, who concluded that "The curators of this year's biennial refuse the impossible task of defining Southern art." [12] [13] Mabe has three objects in the permanent collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia. [14] [5] Mabe conducts tours of The Loudermilk Boarding House which contains the Everything Elvis collection. [15] [16] In 2020 she was one of three women artists featured in the exhibition Southern Values. [17]
In 1993 she published the paperback Joni Mabe's classic postcard book: From her museum of obsessions, personalities, & oddities. In 1994 she participated in Art ex Libris, an international exhibition of original book art at Artspace Gallery in Richmond, Virginia. Published in 1988, Joni Mabe's museum book : the first museum in book form is an artist's book in the Gunst Collection of Special Collections at Stanford University. [18] Her Elvis Presley Scrapbook, one of only four copies made and signed by the artist, was sold by Swann Galleries. [19]
She was the recipient of a Ford Foundation grant in 2018 and became a fellow of the Southeastern Center of Contemporary Art /RJ Reynolds in 1987. [20] [21]
Jessica Jackson Hutchins is an American artist from Chicago, Illinois who is based in Portland, Oregon. Her practice consists of large scale ceramics, multi-media installations, assemblage, and paintings all of which utilize found objects such as old furniture, ceramics, worn out clothes, and newspaper clippings. She is most recognizable for her sloppy craft assemblages of furniture and ceramics. Her work was selected for the 2010: Whitney Biennial, featured in major art collections, and has been exhibited throughout the United States and internationally, in Iceland, the UK, and Germany.
Alma Woodsey Thomas was an African-American artist and teacher who lived and worked in Washington, D.C., and is now recognized as a major American painter of the 20th century. Thomas is best known for the "exuberant", colorful, abstract paintings that she created after her retirement from a 35-year career teaching art at Washington's Shaw Junior High School.
Alison Saar is a Los Angeles-based sculptor, mixed-media, and installation artist. Her artwork focuses on the African diaspora and black female identity and is influenced by African, Caribbean, and Latin American folk art and spirituality. Saar is well known for "transforming found objects to reflect themes of cultural and social identity, history, and religion." Saar credits her parents, collagist and assemblage artist Betye Saar and painter and art conservator Richard Saar, for her early exposure to are and to these metaphysical and spiritual practices. Saar followed in her parents footsteps along with her sisters, Lezley Saar and Tracye Saar-Cavanaugh who are also artists. Saar has been a practicing artist for many years, exhibiting in galleries around the world as well as installing public art works in New York City. She has received achievement awards from institutions including the New York City Art Commission as well as the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston.
Chakaia Booker is an American sculptor known for creating monumental, abstract works for both the gallery and outdoor public spaces. Booker’s works are contained in more than 40 public collections and have been exhibited across the United States, Europe, Africa, and Asia. Booker was included in the 2000 Whitney Biennial, received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2005, and an American Academy of Arts and Letters Award for Art in 2001. Booker has lived and worked in New York City’s East Village since the early 1980s and maintains a production studio in Allentown, Pennsylvania.
Cornelia H. "Connie" Butler is an American museum curator, author, and art historian. Since 2023, Butler is the Director of MoMA PS1. From 2013 to 2023, she was the Chief Curator at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles.
Jiha Moon is a contemporary artist who focuses on painting, printmaking, and sculptural ceramic objects. Born in Daegu, South Korea, Moon is currently based in Tallahassee, Florida, after years of living and working in Atlanta, Georgia. She joined Florida State University's Art department faculty in the fall of 2023.
Jody Zellen is an American artist and educator. Her practice, consisting of digital art, painting, video art, and drawing, has been showcased by way of interactive installations, public art, and curated exhibitions. She is also known for her art criticism.
Annette Cone-Skelton is a Georgia-based American artist, teacher, gallerist and art consultant. Currently, she is director and president of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia. She studied at the Atlanta School of Art, now known as the Atlanta College of Art. Cone-Skelton's work is represented in the collections of various regional museums and galleries, public and private collections. The High Museum, the museums of Louis, Charlotte, Chattanooga, Birmingham and Montgomery and several academic institutions including Cornell University hold her work. She has been included in exhibitions at Le Grand Prix de Peinture and the National Museum of Women in the Arts.
Andrea Chung is an American artist born in Newark, NJ and currently works in San Diego, CA. Her work focuses primarily on island nations in the Indian Ocean and the Caribbean Sea; specifically on how outsiders perceive a fantastic reality in spaces deemed as “paradise”. In conjunction, she explores relationships between these cultures, migration, and labor - all within the context of colonial and postcolonial regimes. Her projects bring in conscientious elements of her own labor and incorporate materials significant to the cultures she studies. This can be seen in works such as, “Bato Disik”, displayed in 2013 at the Helmuth Projects, where the medium of sugar represents the legacy of sugar plantations and colonial regime.

Craig Drennen is an American artist based in Atlanta, Georgia. He is best known for his ongoing long-term Timon of Athens project, for which he has produced paintings, drawings, prints, videos, performances, sculptures. His work shows technical agility across a wide range of influences that spans abstraction, representation, and conceptual practices. In a catalog essay, the curator Diana Nawi writes that Drennen's "…multifaceted, dense, and ambitious practice suggests a world of meaning defined by symbols that emerge in different media and coalesce across projects."
Pam Longobardi is an American contemporary artist and ecofeminist, currently living and working in Atlanta, Georgia. She is known internationally for sculptural works and installations created from plastic debris, primarily from marine and coastal environments, as a primary material. Much of her work includes community-based research, such as carbon or plastic audits, as well as collaborative art creation.
Michi Meko is an American multidisciplinary artist based in Atlanta, Georgia. He is the recipient of the Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant and the Atlanta Artadia Award as well as a finalist for the 2019 Hudgens Prize. His work incorporates the visual language of naval flags and nautical wayfinding, combined with romanticized objects of the American South. Throughout his various platforms, his work engages contradictions and paradoxes that he uncovers through examining his personal history, African American folk traditions, and narratives that confront or circumvent established narratives.
Nancy Floyd, born in Monticello, Minnesota in 1956, is an American photographer. Her photographic subjects mainly concern women and the female body during youth, pregnancy, and while aging. Her project She's Got a Gun comprises portraits of women and their firearms, which is linked to her Texas childhood. Floyd's work has been shown in 18 solo exhibitions and is held in the collections of the Museum of Contemporary Photography and the High Museum of Art. Floyd is a professor emeritus of photography at the Ernest G. Welch School of Art and Design at Georgia State University.

Linda Mitchell is an American artist. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, her works have been exhibited widely, especially in the US. She is known for her mixed-media animal paintings and installations. She has two MFAs from Georgia State University in painting and sculpture. Linda combines painted and sculptural imagery, creating multimedia paintings that are intricate, surreal scenes, reflecting life’s complexity – layered with experience, memory, expectations, hopes, and dreams. Linda Mitchell's works have been exhibited since 1982.
