Jorhat Theatre is a theatre organization in Jorhat, Assam, India with a history of over a hundred years. [1]

History

From 1875, Jagannath Barooah's social cultural organization "Jorhat Sarbajanik Sabha" performed various dramas in the festival of Durga Puja in the name of "Jorhat Amateur Theatre". Later in 1896, some key peoples of Jorhat like Chandradhar Baruah, Radha Kanta Handique, Bedanta Baspati, Radhanath Phukon initiated the establishment of "Jorhat Theatre". [2] [3] The first drama performed at Jorhat Theatre was "Ramani Gabhoru" by Bhudhindranath Delihial Bhattacharya, the first secretary of Jorhat Theatre.

It was founded in December 1917 in Assam, India to promote the culture of Assam and Assamese literature. A branch of the organisation named Singapore Sahitya Sabha was launched in Singapore on July 28, 2019.

There were three Burmese invasions of Assam between 1817 and 1826, during which time the Kingdom of Assam came under the control of Burma from 1821 to 1825. Locally, this period, called the manor din by the people of Assam, is remembered with horror. The sharp drop in population due both to depredations as well emigrations left the erstwhile kingdom in shambles. It was the climactic period of the Ahom kingdom. The British, who were earlier reluctant to colonise Assam, came into direct contact with a belligerent Burmese occupying force. Following the First Anglo-Burmese War they annexed Assam and took Manipur as a subsidiary state.

Chandradhar Barua was a writer, poet, dramatist and lyricist from Assam of Jonaki Era, the age of romanticism of Assamese literature. Barua was born at Jorhat, Assam on 15 October 1878. He was second president of the Asam Sahitya Sabha in 1918 held at Goalpara. He was the founder secretary of Asam Sahitya Sabha Patrika, an official journal of the Asam Sahitya Sabha established at 1927 and held in that position till 1936. He also represented India at the Round Table Conference held at London in 1930.

Budhindranath Delihial Bhattacharya, also known as Budhi Babu, Budhindra Nath Bhattacharya, is renowned for his work The Pronouncing Anglo Assamese Dictionaries, which was first published in 1931. He was also a tea planter of The Crown of England, which later came under the Governments of Assam & West Bengal.

Dulal Chandra Baruah was a politician from Assam and Janata Dal (United) state unit President. He was deputy chief minister and PWD minister in Government of Assam headed by Golap Borbora in 1979. He was a Member of Assam Legislative Assembly for Jorhat and Charaibahi.

The most significant and a landmark development in the cultural life of Assam was the establishment of the Baan Stage (old) or Baan theatre, the first modern Assamese theatre hall at Tezpur in 1906. The Baan Stage gave a platform for development of the Socio-Cultural scene of Assam. The great cultural trio Rupkonwar Jyoti Prasad Agarwala, Kalaguru Bishnu Prasad Rabha and Nata Surya Phani Sarma blossomed here. Phani Sarma along with Bishnu Rabha directed the most successful Assamese movie Siraj.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Lakshmi Nandan Bora</span> Indian writer (1932–2021)

Lakshmi Nandan Bora was an Indian novelist and short story writer in the Assamese language, known for over 60 books he has authored, including award winning novels, Patal Bhairavi and Kayakalpa. A recipient of Sahitya Academy Award and Saraswati Samman, Bora was honoured by the Government of India in 2015 with Padma Shri, the fourth highest Indian civilian award. He died on 3 June 2021 from complications caused by COVID-19.

<i>Piyoli Phukan</i> (1955 film) 1955 Indian film

Piyoli Phukan is a black & white Assamese language film directed by Phani Sarma, released in 1955. The film is based on the life and struggle of a historical character of Assam, Piyoli Phukan, son of Badan Borphukan, who revolted against British occupation. He was sentenced to death and hanged in 1830 at Jorhat. The film is produced by Gama Prasad Agarwalla under the banner of Rupjyoti Productions, Tezpur, Assam. Music is composed by Bhupen Hazarika. Piyoli Phukan is the first Assamese film, which got national recognition. The film was honoured by the Certificate of Merit in State Awards, 1956.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Lakhimi Baruah</span>

Lakhimi Baruah is an Indian banker, social worker and founder of Assam's first women run Co-operative bank Konoklata Mahila Urban Cooperative Bank for women. In 2021 she was awarded the Padma Shri, the fourth-highest civilian award in the Republic of India, for contributions and efforts to financially empower women of Assam.

Neel Pawan Baruah was an Indian painter from Assam. In 2021, he was awarded the Assam Sourav Award, the second-highest civilian honor of Assam by the Government of Assam. Some of his notable paintings include Green Bird, Kaliya Daman, Shankhachakra Gadapadma, Sleeping Man, Victory of Vietnam, Scream, Three Powers, Patchitra and The Three Faces of the Godde.
