Joseph Cheromei Kiprotich (born 24 January 1966) is a Kenyan former long-distance runner and athletics coach. He was a team gold medallist at the 1993 IAAF World Half Marathon Championships with Lameck Aguta and Thomas Osano, having finished sixteenth individually. His personal best for the marathon was 2:11:44 hours, achieved at the 1997 Prague International Marathon. [1]

He regularly ran on the European professional road running circuit from 1992 to 2003 and won the Giro di Castelbuono (1993), Livorno Marathon (1998) and Quattro Porte Half Marathon (1998). [2] [3] [4] During the course of his career, he completed no less than 43 marathons. In addition to Livorno, he won marathons in Italy in Pompei and Parabita, as well as the Florianópolis marathon in Brazil. At higher level races, he was runner-up at the Italian Marathon in 1997 and the 20 km of Brussels in 1995, and was fourth at the 1995 Florence Marathon. [5]

After retiring he went into coaching and among others coached his sister Lydia Cheromei. [6] [7]

Lydia Cheromei is a Kenyan athlete born into a family of athletes. She specialises in long distance running. She rose to fame at the age of thirteen with a win in the junior race at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships. She took some years away from competition, citing burnout, and returned in the mid-nineties, making an appearance at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

Sammy Lelei is a former long-distance runner from Kenya, who won the 1995 Berlin Marathon with a career best time of 2:07:02 hours. It was the fastest marathon time in 1995. This time stood as the Kenyan record for the event until 1998, when it was beaten by Ondoro Osoro.

Germán Silva Martínez is a Mexican former long-distance runner who specialized in the marathon. His foremost achievements were back-to-back victories at the New York City Marathon in 1994 and 1995. He represented Mexico twice at the Summer Olympics, in 1992 and 1996. He also competed at the World Championships in Athletics on two occasions. His personal best for the marathon is two hours, eight minutes, and 56 seconds.

The Giro di Castelbuono is an annual road running competition over 10 kilometres which takes place in Castelbuono, on the island of Sicily, Italy. First held in 1912, the competition, which holds IAAF Gold Label Road Race status, is one of the oldest road races in Europe, which is the inspiration for the event's nickname – "La Corsa Più Antica". The race, typically held on July 26 to coincide with Saint Anne's Day, has been held almost every year since its inauguration, although the two World Wars interrupted the event over those periods. The race has been broadcast every year for a decade by Italian television channel Rai Sport Più.

His half marathon best ranks him among the top twenty all-time for the distance. He has won the Madrid Marathon and the Lille Half Marathon, both in course record times.

Thomas Osano is a Kenyan former long-distance runner who competed across track, road, and cross country running disciplines. His greatest individual honour was a 10,000 metres gold medal at the 1991 All-Africa Games. He also shared in a team gold medal with Kenya at the 1993 IAAF World Half Marathon Championships.

Andrew Masai is a Kenyan former long-distance runner who competed in road running and cross country running events. He was one of Kenya's best cross country runners in the late 1980s, taking six team gold medals at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships. His best individual finish at that competition was sixth in 1987. He was key to the rise of Kenya in cross country, helping the nation to its first team title and scoring points which helped establish an unbeaten streak in the team race which lasted from 1986 to 2003.
