Herman Carl McCall is an American politician of the Democratic Party. A former New York State Comptroller and New York State Senator,McCall was the Democratic candidate for Governor of New York in 2002. McCall was the first African-American to be elected New York State Comptroller. He is an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ,and is on the board of directors of several corporations. From October 17,2011,until his retirement on June 30,2019,McCall was chairman of the State University of New York Board of Trustees.
George Elmer Pataki is an American politician who served as the 53rd Governor of New York from 1995 to 2006. He previously served in the State Legislature from 1985 to 1994,and as the Mayor of Peekskill from 1981 to 1984. Mary O'Connor Donohue is an American retired educator,attorney,politician and Judge of the New York Court of Claims,who served as the lieutenant governor of New York from 1999 to 2006. Donohue was first elected lieutenant governor in 1998,and was re-elected in 2002.

Jerome Heartwell "Brud" Holland was an American university president and diplomat. He was the first African American to play college football at Cornell University,and was chosen as an All American in 1937 and 1938. He was also the first African American to chair the American Red Cross Board of Governors,which named its Laboratory for the Biomedical Sciences in his honor. He was the first African-American to sit on the board of the New York Stock Exchange (1972),and the first appointed to Massachusetts Institute of Technology's governing body,"The Corporation".

Incumbent Democratic Governor Mario Cuomo ran for a fourth term,but was defeated by Republican George Pataki in an upset victory. Pataki had previously been described by the New York Daily News as "a little-known Republican state senator." Nicholas A. Langworthy is an American politician serving as the U.S. representative for New York's 23rd district since 2023. He was formerly the chair of the New York State Republican Committee. Langworthy was named chair of the committee in July 2019 after having chaired the Erie County,New York Republican Committee since 2010. He was the youngest state chair in party history.
The 2022 New York Attorney General election was held on November 8,2022. Incumbent Democratic Attorney General Letitia James was eligible for re-election,but originally decided to run for Governor of New York in 2022. On December 9,2021,however,she suspended her gubernatorial campaign and announced that she would seek re-election as attorney general. Republicans nominated Michael Henry,an attorney from Queens. James defeated Henry by a margin of 9.2%,a massive underperformance from her 27.2% victory in 2018.
