Joseph I. Pines (1922-2009) was an American lawyer and Judge on the Supreme Bench of Baltimore City (later renamed the Circuit Court for Baltimore). [1]
Pines,the son of a grocer,was born Joseph I. Pinas in New York City. In 1925,his father moved the family to Baltimore where they settled on East Biddle Street. His father established a grocery store on Orleans Street and later moved to Liberty Heights Avenue in Northwest Baltimore,when he opened a store. Pines was a 1939 graduate of Baltimore City College. He earned his law degree from the University of Baltimore in 1942,5 years later he changed his name to Joseph I Pines. [1] Pines was admitted to Maryland Bar in 1943 and was a member,American,Maryland State and Baltimore City Bar Associations. He was also a member of the American Trial Lawyers Association.
Pines was appointed to Supreme Bench of Baltimore City,January 28,1980 and retired from the Baltimore City Circuit Court,February 19,1992. He continued to hear cases as a visiting judge through 2001. [2] Pines is described as having a very even-tempered demeanor and was always very fair by Judge Joseph H. H. Kaplan who also said of Pines "I was the administrative judge for a lot of the years he was on the bench,and I never heard one complaint about his mistreating someone." [1] In June 1986,a Baltimore jury convicted Flint Gregory Hunt of first degree murder,and he was sentenced to death by Judge Pines the following month. [3] Pines was a member of the Maryland Judicial Conference and part of the Conference's executive committee.
On April 16,2009,Judge Pines died at the age of 87,just four days after his wife Marcia died. Interment was at the Beth Tfiloh Cemetery. [4]

He retired July 17,1998 and died by suicide in November,2004.
Henry Stump (1795–1865) served as Judge of the Criminal Court,5th Judicial Circuit in Baltimore,Maryland,United States,from 1851 to 1860,one of the most lawless and politically violent decades in Baltimore history. He presided over the infamous trial of Plug-Ugly Henry Gambrill for the murder of a Baltimore police officer. In 1860,the Maryland General Assembly removed Stump from office for "misbehavior," the only jurist in Maryland history to be removed from the bench. Stump was also an eyewitness to the April 19,1861 riots in Baltimore that marked the first bloodshed in the American Civil War.
Flint Gregory Hunt was an American murderer executed by the state of Maryland in 1997. Hunt shot Baltimore police officer Vincent Adolfo twice in an East Baltimore alley on November 18,1985,after Adolfo spotted him running from a stolen Cadillac. He was captured five days later at a bus station in Tulsa,Oklahoma. In June 1986,a Baltimore jury convicted Hunt of first-degree murder,and he was sentenced to death the following month. Eleven years later,Hunt was executed by lethal injection at the Maryland State Penitentiary at the age of 38.

Joseph F. Murphy Jr. was an American lawyer and jurist from Baltimore,Maryland. Between December 17,2007,and September 30,2011,he was a judge of the Maryland Court of Appeals,the highest court in Maryland. Prior to this appointment,Murphy served as the Chief Judge of the Court of Special Appeals,Maryland's intermediate court of appeals. He was also an instructor at the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law.
German H.H. Emory (1882–1918) was a prominent American lawyer and soldier from Baltimore. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross "for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with the 3rd Battalion,320th Infantry Regiment,80th Division,American Expeditionary Forces,near Sommerance,France November 1,1918." He was killed in action in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive,in the waning days of World War I. He is commemorated with a memorial painting and two memorial sculptures in Maryland courthouses.
