Early life and education

Joseph was born on November 26, 1954, to Alathoor Panakkal Mathukutty and Kunjanji. His father, Mathukutty, was the son of Sri Ittuppu, a sibling of Alathoor Cheriya Thirumeni Paulose Mar Athanasius. Mathukutty, a retired Havildar Major in the Indian Army, had eight children, with Joseph being the fifth. Among Joseph's four elder sisters, three passed away at a young age.

Joseph's father, Mathukutty, served as a member of the Thozhiyoor Church council for 37 consecutive years, starting in 1949.

He completed his primary education at Kunnamkulam David Memorial L.P. School and his high school education at M.J.D. High School. He pursued his pre-degree studies at Guruvayur Sreekrishna Collegee and obtained a B.A. degree in History and English from St. Thomas College, Thrissur. In the academic year 1978–79, he earned a B.Ed. degree from Municipal College, Chikkaballapur, Karnataka.

Career

At the age of 11, Joseph began serving as an altar assistant at the diocesan church. He received the rank of Deacon on March 5, 1972, and the rank of Full Deacon on 21 November 1976, from His Grace Paulose Mar Philoxenos Metropolitan. From 1976 to June 1978, he served as the manager of the St. Thomas Press in Kunnamkulam, owned by the church. During this period, he also worked as the secretary of the Gospel Association.

On 1 March 1978, he was ordained as a priest by His Grace Mathews Mar Koorilos Metropolitan at the diocesan church. Later that same month, he was elected as the church secretary. At the end of April 1978, he moved to stay at the Kunnamkulam Church as instructed by the Metropolitan.

On 11 July 1978, with the Metropolitan's permission, he resigned from the position of church secretary to pursue a B.Ed. course at Chikkaballapur, Karnataka. From September onwards, he began conducting Holy Qurbana at the chapel of the CSI Hospital in Chikkaballapur on Sundays. After completing the course in early May 1979, he returned to the diocese.

Consecration

Joseph Mar Koorilose IX was consecrated as the Metropolitan of the Church on August 27, 1986, by Dr. Alexander Mar Thoma. [4] [5] [6] [7]

Despite the brevity of his reign he made lasting contributions to the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church.

Baselios Paulose I or Murimattathil Bava was the first Catholicos of the East after its reinstatement in India. The First Catholicos of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church was in power only for seven months and eighteen days. He was 76 years old when he became the Catholiocs and died the following year.

His Beatitude Cyril Mar Baselios I is the current Metropolitan and Primate of the Malabar Independent Syrian Church. He is the 14th metropolitan of Thozhiyoor succeeding Joseph Mar Koorilose IX.

Kattumanghattu Abraham Mar Koorilos I was the first primate and Metropolitan of the Malabar Independent Syrian Church in Kerala, India, although it was known initially as Thozhiyoor Church when established in 1772. Abraham Koorilos I is popularly known as Kattumangattu Valiya Bava.

Saint Coorilos Paulose of Panampady, also known as Kochuparambil Thirumeni, or Panampady Thirumeni, was Malankara Metropolitan of the Malankara Syrian Orthodox Church in India from 1911 until his death in 1917. He was canonized in 2008 by Ignatius Zakka I.
